Two Wisconsin legislators plan to submit a bill preventing the Department of Natural Resources from establishing a permanent ban on baiting and feeding deer. The ban was imposed last year to stem the spread of chronic wasting disease.
Scientists have found 62 deer with CWD, all in southwestern Wisconsin within miles of where the disease was discovered in early 2002.
The DNR recently began using bait piles in the 411-square-mile eradication zone near Mount Horeb in an attempt to kill 30,000 deer.
State Rep. Scott Suder, R-Abbotsford, said his bill would remove the statewide baiting ban outside the eradication zone.
DNR wildlife manager John Dunn said baiting can cause the disease to spread more quickly because it can bring healthy and diseased deer together.
"There are plenty of experts out there who feel that this is passed on by contact," Dunn said last week. "Nobody's saying that feeding and baiting brought (the disease) here. What we're saying is that it is a means of spreading it once it's here."
Leftover turkey licenses: Hunters who applied for a spring turkey license and were not selected in the lottery have a second chance to purchase a license for the hunt. Leftover licenses go on sale at 5 p.m. Monday at Electronic License System agents in Minnesota.
There are 3,088 licenses in 127 permit areas.
