Any one know what a model 12 winchester riot gun, 12 gauge nickel steel ser. 172*** is worth

Well, a lot would depend.

Is it really a commercial Riot Gun or military Trench Gun, and so marked?
Or just a cut-off Model 12?

Your gun would appear to be made in 1918, the last year of WWI.
I believe most Model 12 production was still going to the war effort that year, and Trench Guns where still probably a top priority.

A real Trench Gun would have the steel handguard, bayonet lug, and U.S. & flaming bomb ordinance acceptance stamp.

A GI Riot Gun would have the flaming bomb stamp and U.S. markings.

A commercial Riot Gun would have a barrel marked as such.

Any of those three would command a high price. Up to several thousand perhaps, if in good condition and all original

But a commercial Model 12 field grade with a cut-off barrel?
Not so much.

Riot gun

This gun susposed to have came from a guard at Wilson dam on the Tenn. river when they were being built. Before I was born. I'm pretty sure it has not been sawed off. It says nickle steel on the barrel, lists some dates. I can't remember all the details, but 1908 comes to mind.

The forarm stock has been replaced. I don't know about the butt stock.

Well Wilson TVA dam dates to a 1918 beginnig, completed in 1924.
Same year as your 1918, 172*** serial number.

Wheeler TVA Dam began in 1933 and was completed in 1936.

Still, a real Riot Gun would have Riot Gun - Cyl markings right on the 20" barrel.

If it is shorter then 20", or lacks the Riot Gun barrel markings, or is marked with Mod or Full choke, I would suspect a hacksaw got too it.

What exactly does it say on the barrel?
