Moderate range scope recommendations for an M1 Carbine?

I am new to rifle ownership and want an M1 carbine. I am buying a USGI parts built M1 carbine (springfield receiver, all other parts USGI, never been fired). It was built by my local FFL (Marine). It has a surplus maple stock. I view this as a shooter, not a collectable. He put it together with scope rings, recommending a Leupold 4x sight. I have read the amazing "sticky" about Long Range scopes/setups by Zak Smith. Amazing thread, but I'm not in that league. I'm going to use this rifle to target shoot. Want to buy best possible scope with longer ranges in mind. I'm "maxed" out (price-wise) at a Leupold VX-II 3-9X. I guess I'm thinking of going this "high" because of the 1/4 click MOA adjustments.
Am I thinking along the right lines? I appreciate your thoughts and insights!

An M-1 carbine is not a long range rifle. It is basically a pistol calber carbine, in my view a 100 to 150 yd cartrige.
