We had a discussion of this trigger about two months ago. A search will reveal more info.

I have one, I like it, it's mostly a competition trigger for 3-gun style shooting. It could be used for what you describe, but the SSA-E would probably be a better choice.

it's been discussed quite a few times this year. search would turn up lots of opinions. for search, it's sometimes abbreviated "SD3G"

Taliv, I saw where you stated the use of this trigger at a long range comp and felt it was not the most suited for the task, was this because of ‘smooth creep’ of the trigger? Do you typically use a 2 stage for long range shooting?

Z-Michigan, How does your 3 gun rifle w/ sd3g feel when shooting off a bi-pod or bench?

Thanks!

I recently installed the SSA-E in my AR after a few months of research and overall very happy with the purchase, mainly I target shoot and this trigger improved my groups significantly plus install time was about 10 minutes.

Difficult to describe a trigger "feel" IMO but to me it's similar to my Savage accutriggers on the lowest setting which is what I wanted switching from gun to gun at range with comparable feel on the trigger.

Who shoots a 3-gun rifle off a bipod or bench? :)

I actually have shot it a bit off a bench, and from supported positions. It's a compromise. It has a surprise break with no 2nd stage, so you can't really set up the shot like you can with a good 2-stage or a light conventional single-stage trigger. It works well enough out to 100 yards in limited shooting. It is primarily a speed trigger. I've run competitions with an SDC also and while the SD3 makes for faster double taps, the overall time difference in a typical stage is tiny. I like the SD3, but I view it as a specialized competition trigger, and if I wanted an all-around trigger I would get the SSA or SDC.

Glad I asked, sounds like this would not be well suited to my use.

I also saw an American Gold Trigger; seems like it would be better for precision shooting, but the price tag made me sick! I'll do a little more reading on these triggers, but it looks like the SSA-E you suggested is at the top of the list right now.

Thanks,
MtnCreek

mtncreek,

when shooting a bolt gun, or precision long range comp, the trigger reset isn't important because running the bolt and transitioning to your next target will give you plenty of time to reset the trigger. what's important is knowing when the thing is going to go off. long range and precision matches are usually decided by number of hits, not hundredths of seconds.

as previously stated, the SD3G trigger doesn't give you any indication of when it's going to go off... you just start moving the trigger back and then... bang, followed by near instant reset and ready to go bang again.

think about it this way... if you're shooting positional and you've got your 'wobble zone'... i.e. the gun is moving in a sortof figure-8 pattern around the target because you are shooting unsupported or off a wobbly barricade, etc... if you know exactly when the gun is going to go bang, you can lead the target and pull the trigger when the gun is just starting to cross the target. but if you don't know, then you have to hold the gun on the target the whole time you're pulling the trigger, not just the last bit of the 2nd stage
