Ok, experiment time. Conditions at the time were 3006 baro (neat number) 93 f, 79 ft elevation, light wind (2 to 5 mph) trailing from the south. Humidity was about 65%.

The Chrono is an Oehler 35P, set at 12 ft from the muzzle. All strings were 20 shots over the chronograph. (May have nicked it for the first time ever, but not sure, just there seems to be just a bit of plastic missing from the support rails on one of the screens...) The chrono reports, high, low, spread, mean and sd.

Experiment #1, 2506 sendero. Test of different brass with the same load.
Load was Sierra 100 grn spitzer, WLRM primer, 50.0 grns of IMR4831, COL of 3.200, cases trimmed to 2.4800.

Winches 3010+ 2943- 67e 2981m 21s
Federal 3111+ 3031- 80e 3057m 29s

Interesting to see that federal brass is that much faster then winchester brass. I would not have expected so much differences.

Experiment 2, 2506 sendero. Just a powder check of retumbo. The bullet was a 117 grn Sierra Spitzer with a WLRM primer, 3.130 COL.

56 grns 2910+ 2844- 66e 2876m 19s
60 grns 3150+ 3118- 32e 3132m 12s

Nice sds for a 20 shot string, good velocities. To bad there was extrusion into the ejector and these would be considered overloads for my gun. Both did it. Sigh. I guess I will try 54 grns next time. Very accurate load though!

Experiment 3, 3030 winchester, (nice pre-64 shooter that I put peeps on). The experiement was to see if the Lee FCD helped at all on accuracy or SD's. I used the Lee FCD to put a "light" crimp on the bullet. Just enough that it was obvious that I had done something over just using the RCBS seater die. The load is my standard. Seirra 150 grn FP, with a WLR primer, 26.0 grns of RE7, 2.520 col, remington brass.

No lee 2079+ 2010- 69e 2042m 22s
Lee fcd 2176+ 2033- 143e 2062m 41s

Interesting, I was not expecting the Lee FCD to chew up my loads so much. The accuracy was noticeably off, and as you can see the SD and the extreme spread are nearly double. Well one could say that the FCD was not working right or I was misusing it. I guess I will try crimping a bit more and try this again. I though it was supposed to help, but then again, maybe it is just advertising.

Experiment 4, 3030 winchester again. Test of xmr 2495 vs. imr 3031. This was just a powder check experiment. Nothing special. The bullet was a seirra 150 grn fp, WLR primers, 2.520 col, Remington brass.

29.5x3031 2075+ 1937- 138e 2017m 41s
28.7xXmr2495 1927+ 1763- 164e 1855m 43s

XMR gives a much sharper recoil. I guess I need to crank up the powder a bit more, but it sure was a harsh load. I liked 3031 much better, but RE7 is now my favorite.

I use the Lee FCDs for pistol. I have found that so far I get better results for taper crimps if I set it between moderate and heavy. Being a total nutcase, I trim my pistol brass into lots to the nearest .001 so they will crimp uniformly. I hope to begin reloading .38/.357 this winter and it seems to me a roll crimp would profit more from uniform case lengths than a taper crimp. Logical?
