More questions about reloading 308 for Ruger American

I use a cold wet towel to cool the barrel down and yes it makes a difference. In the summer, it's three shots then a cool down with a cold wet towel. This is for my .243 and .270W. If the barrel is too hot to keep my hand on it for about 10 sec. it is too hot.

After using the towel have u ever noticed any uneven spots with the temp.? Do u use the towel then wait a bit for things to even out? Lol, I just hate waiting on my barrel, and my rifle has a thin one too. Can't even do a 4-shot string without seeing heat waves in my scope.

I am developing 30 Cal loads, (.308, 30-30, 30-06, and 300 Winmag), having superb luck with the Hornady ELD-X bullets. Sub-MOA at 200 yards (just under 1/2" groups). If you are developing loads, I would recommend, also, separate cases, and I use Match Primers. With my Chrony, I had 5 rounds touching at 200 yds, Std Dev 17fps, Velocity at Barrel was 2711fps. Very Accurate. I would have to check my Load Logs to see which bullet and power, etc was used.

The reason most shots start walking away from point of aim is the barrel's not fit correctly to the receiver. If the receiver face isn't square with the barrel tenon threads, the barrel shoulder will bear hard against the receiver at one point. As both expand as they heat up, the barrel has a stress line at the hard contact point which causes it to whip more in that direction for each shot.

Properly fit, free-floating barrels of any weight or shape will go dozens of shots fired 15 to 20 seconds apart and not change point of impact.

Any competent gunsmith should be able to face the receiver square with its barrel tenon threads then shim the barrel back in place to maintain proper headspace (and sights if so equipped).

With some patience, one can shoot 3 shots, let the barrel cool for 5 to 10 minutes, then repeat this for 15 to 20 shots total in the same group. You'll get a 5 times better representation of the accuracy of the rifle and ammo (and of course, your own skills). The centers of each of five 3-shot groups are not all in the same place; so a composite of all shots fired represents reality all the time, not once in a while.

Joshboyfutre, I don't measure the heat distribution on the barrel with anything other than my hand. My rifles are hunting rifles and I care only about the first two or three shots. I've never had to shoot a deer more than three times.

Joshboyfuture just wanted to let you know I am headed to the range this morning
