Do all Mosin Nagants have sticky bolt syndrome? Is there a way to avoid SBS?
Can you recommend a hunting load or whitetails? All full of questions today aren't I! :) Thanks in advance guys!

Clean clean clean clean clean is the answer. Mosins are often very filthy and need a very thorough cleaning. Most shooters don't know how to thoroughly clean a rifle. The mosin is a great gun to learn with IMO. :)

I spent a good amount of time cleaning mine when I first got it. Its a fun gun and easy to break down and put back together.

Clean the chamber.
When 60+ year old cosmoline is dryed and its shot, first time users get 'sticky bolt". This is because removeing that cosmoline is no quick and easy chore.

Now when they have been cleaned proper , but the bare steel isnt lightly oiled to protect it, you will get Sticky bolt if you go to use ity a few months later.light surface rust/roughing can occur on unprotected steel at room humiditys.

If your bolt is getting 'sticky', Clean the chamber and then again, then lightly oil and wipe, then store as normal.

Sticky bolt is a Mosin was of telling you to clean the chanber. Use clean ammo too, stuff outta the pocket can have anything on it.

Thanks. I actually haven't fired mine yet but I heard about SBS a lot so I wanted to avoid it if possible.

You have to distinguish between true SBS and simply ammo that Mosin doesn't like. Also remember not to open it with your finger tips. Smack it open with your palm.

I sporterize my Mosins... The new, longer turned down bolt handles give as good leverage as a commercial rifle, and I lift with my fingertips...

I would be comfortable with shooting a deer with any soft point out to 100 yards. I'm positive it would be a clean kill further out but that's my limit with iron sights.

Pretty interesting. Mosins are great aren't they? :) I'm going to be shooting mine today.

I used 150gr sp to take a buck this year. Dropped on the spot. The mosin is a more than capable rifle for deer.

As stated above - clean the chamber and bore well. I used mineral spirits to really get the cosmoline out. Trust me - it is dirtier than you think. I now only shoot brass - non-corrosive ammo through mine. No sticky bolt issues.

I just shot 20 rnds through it and no problems! Thanks for all your help! I don't think I own a more fun gun!
