Mossberg 500 Action release problem

I'm a newbie to this forum and new to shotguns. I recently bought a mossberg 500 special purpose model with the 20" barrel and 8 shot mag. My first day at the range was cut short due to bored children, but I did manage to fire a few rounds of #8 shot through it without a problem. When I got home, I checked again to make sure it was not loaded. I pumped the action and dry fired it and the action release button got sucked up into the trigger housing and the action jammed. I had to pull pretty hard on the forend but it finally released. Is this common on these guns or did I screw something up?

sounds like it might be a shipping grease issue. if i were you, i would take it down, clean it, put it back together and lubricate it, and see if it happens again.

I broke it down and greased it. The action still jammed the first time I tried it again but it seemed to loosen up after that. It still doesn't feel as smooth as I thought it should. Maybe after I put a few more round through it, it will straighten itself out. Thanks for the advice.

Humm ? The action release button you speak of has a forward end that makes contact with the rear of the bolt carrier to lock the bolt forward when the front tip is in it's upward position. (action locked forward)

There are two methods of releasing the bolt - one is manualy, by pushing upward on the action release button which draws the tip of the bolt lock downward , clearing it from the rear of the bolt carrier.

The second is by releasing the hammer to fall forward which interacts with the bolt lock lever drawing it downward in the same manner.

ps: I assume by "grease" you mean oil ?

Look for anything that would prevent the front tip of this bolt lock (release lever) from completely clearing the rear of the bolt carrier . Something not allowing it to travel completely downward and out of the way.
