I’ve got an older (1994 model) mossberg 500a in the mariner silver finish with an 18.5” barrel on it. Right now it’s a home defense shotgun, however I was thinking of getting a more useful barrel size for it and making it a backup or loaner hunting shotgun if my Benelli has a problem or if someone else with me has problems or doesn’t own a shotgun. Then I could just swap barrels back and forth between hunting and home defense. I emailed mossberg and they said they offer a blue or a matte blue vent rib all purpose 28” barrel with accu-choke plus 3 chokes that they say will fit my model for $207 plus shipping. I looked around on eBay and I see them on there for anywhere from 80-$115, BUT they say they are made by Target Sports. My question is should I spend the extra $100 and order direct from Mossberg or are the Target Sports barrels of good reliable proper fitting quality?

You should be able to find Mossberg barrels on eBay as well. Try Gunbroker and other web sites. I've seen plenty of them for less than $100. I know nothing about the Target Sports barrels.

My concern with the Bay or any other place is the seller saying it’s a mossberg barrel and it’s actually not and I won’t be able to tell.

I checked out Target’s website and seriously doubt they make barrels. They could be selling Mossberg OEM barrels. Does the barrel from Target come with three chokes? If not then you need to add the cost of chokes to make a fair comparison.

There’s an example of one from a Target Sports brand. It comes with one choke and no writing on the barrel where as some of the mossberg barrels I’ve seen are either stamped mossberg or atleast stamped what chamber and everything they are for.

I looked on eBay and found a half dozen Mossberg barrels listed and in the photos they sure do look like Mossberg's. I'd just go with one from a top listed seller, good selection of barrels for less than $100. If you want to match the mariner finish that may be a longer search and I suspect more expensive.

I bought several Mossberg barrels from Midwest Gunworks a few years ago. At the time they seemed to have the best prices. On their website they have a Mossberg Model 500 28" vent rib barrel with three choke tubes for $182 or a 24" vent rib turkey barrel (this is the one I bought), for $186. If you're looking for other parts and accessories try Havlin Sales and Service.

More than likely if I get another barrel I’ll just have it and the receiver duracoated or something to all match.

Found a 28” vent rib accu-choke barrel with three choke tubes new with marinecote that would match my gun for $228 on eBay. Which is significantly higher than all the blued ones I see on there. Not sure what the average charges are for duracoat. A used blue barrel for say 110 plus a duracoat may make that marinecoat barrel the cheaper route. Not sure what a silver gun and barrel would do for hunting though. Stand out like a sore thumb?

Lots of stainless hunting rifles out there so I don’t think a marinecoat barrel would be any different.

From what I have read those Target Sports barrels that CDNN sells are made in China.

I bought a new ported barrel directly from Mossberg. At the time, nobody had barrels.
