i hope someone has a way to make sure the firing pin/area is clean without taking the bolt assembly apart.

i have several 500s and never had a problem. i did some hunting years ago with them and now i just shoot about 100 buckshot or slugs per year at the range. cleaned them but never dared to take apart the bolt assembly.

I have never taken apart the firing pin/bolt assembly on an pump or semi. Most, if gunked up, can be cleaned with a squirt of brake cleaner through a straw (followed by a squirt of oil or similar)

Don't lubricate it so it will collect debris and form a sludge. As above, squirt some solvent in there and let it drip out, but leave it dry otherwise. That way if you're in cold weather it won't freeze and slow down the travel.

I've never taken any of my shotguns down that far. I just clean them and give them a squirt of G96 Complete Gun Spray. I don't like brake cleaner on guns. It really dries the metal out that can allow flash rust. You want some kind of light lube in there if your in a humid place like you are or where guns go from hot to cold like where I am. I've used the G96 on all my guns with no problems from 98 humid summers to below zero with -20 windchill. Never had a gummed up action or FP. Rust will make it stick.

It's rarely necessary to take the firing pin out of that type of shotgun. Spray Gun Scrubber/ Brake Fluid down the firing pin hole while hold the bolt over a trash can with paper towels or such in it, (wearing gloves, preferably) hose it out with a air hose if you have one, let it air dry if you don't and put a small drop of a light lube down the firing pin hole, and in the back of the firing pin. Of the many, many 870's 1100's and 500's I've worked on, I've replaced one 870 firing pin.
