Has anyone had any experiance with this gun? I am thinking about buying it for my 8 year old son. It comes with two barrels, smooth bore ( will use for turkey ) and fully rifled ( slugs for deer ). I want to know if anyone has used it with Hornadys new SST 20ga. 250gr. slugs? Any info on this gun will be greatly appretiated.

Sounds like a bargin for $325.

Rosco:

I'm not familiar with this particular model, but I have owned & operated Mossbergs for years...just the 12 Ga models, though. Have a couple of younger (under age 16) nephews that have Mossberg Bantam models and like them very well.

As to that particular slug...well each shotgun/barrel/ammo combo is a law unto itself. Buy a small box (5 or 10 rounds) of as many different slugs as you can find locally, and blaze away. You will find that one particular brand (or maybe 2 brands if you are really lucky) that shoot like a target rifle, and the rest of them are no better than a handful of thrown rocks.

Good shotgun, fair price. Can't help you on the ammo. It's nigh impossible to predict how a given shotgun and load will interact without range testing.

Rosco,

My 12 yo daughter has had one since she was ten. She's used it for trap, skeet, sporting clays, five stand, Turkey and Pheasants. She shoots enough that I got her a 20ga Lee Load-All II so she can do her own reloading, but now she bugging me to get her a progressive. It's got the rifled slug barrel, but while she loves the venision I bring home, she has no interest in hunting Bambi herself, so that barrel sits in the safe. I did get a couple of boxes of Brenneke slugs for HD use, since the gun sits in the safe with the 22" smooth bore barrel on it. I have not tried to figure out which slugs the rifled barrel prefers. Maybe in a couple of years she'll change her mind on the Bambi thing, or when my 5yo son gets a little older he'll use it for deer. In the meantime, I'll give my shoulder a break.

Foghornl got it right about finding out which flavor of slugs your gun prefers. Use sabots in the Rifled barrel, use rifled slugs are for smooth bore barrels. Accuracy really suffers if you shoot sabots through a smooth barrel, and rifled slugs through a rifled barrel.

The chokes are interchangable with any other Mossberg 500 (or Stoeger) 20ga.

Good gun, good value, lots of barrels, chokes available, can "grow" with the kid (50% off coupon for full size stock). Can be used for practice, clay games, hunting and HD.

I highly recommend it, have the boy try to wear it out. BA/UU/R.
