Hello all,

This is my first post here first of all.

I just bought a Mossberg 500a persuader with pistol grip only off of a friend for a great deal:) I am going to make it into my new home defense shotgun because I wanna make my saiga 12 more of a safe queen.

My first question is what does everybody think of the blackhawk/knoxx recoil absorbing pistol grip stock.

Second, what sight system should i go for? I am thinking of the xs trijicon ghost ring.

third, which surefire forend do I need I see two mossberg 500 models but I am unsure which one applies

this is a stock image of the weapon, not mine but looks just like it!

That looks just like the one I bought many years ago.

I added a mossberg synthetic standard buttstock (the top-mounted safety is hard to reach with any form of pistol-grip stock) and went with a brass bead (which convieniently it already had) for the fastest sighting arrangement possible.

Any of these Surefire forends will work: http://www.surefire.com/Mossberg590500 Just pick which version of the light you want to go with it.

I have neary the same gun but with a breacher barell and 6 position stock.

I love it. It mans the safe most days but I keep it loaded with 00, Slug, 00, Slug..etc.

Funny thing is I pull the 18" barell off and thow on a bird barrel with a modified choke and hunt upland birds with it.

One of the most versatile guns there is. Damn, I think could drop any animal big or small with the right load.

I have the Knoxx breacher's grip on my Mossberg, and I love it. Most of the recoil shock is absorbed. I could shoot it all day using the proper grip.
What actually happens is the recoil is spread over a longer time, so the perceived impact is way less. The amount of "work" is the same.

I think I want a but stock pistol grip combo. I the knoxx grip with adjustable stock so that it will be easier on the mrs.

I just installed that same knoxx stock on my maverick 88, I put nearly 100 rounds of target shot through it at the range yesterday. I imagine most stocks that dont absorb recoil would only let you fire off 15 rounds without a surgical shoulder joint replacement. I fired it and had a great time. Very comfortable, well worth the 99$ at midwayusa.

Only if the gun fits really badly (stock too long, usually) or the shooter is doing something badly wrong with gun mount etc. It doesn't hurt to shoot a shotgun if you're healthy and your technique is good... no fancy stocks needed.

I dunno, My Saiga s-12 hurts like no other with slugs :) It has the classic AK style stock and pistol grip too.

I used to believe that. I remember seeing videos of a guy shooting a shotgun with one hand while standing on a ladder with one foot, teaching that proper technique allows the shooter to overcome shotgun recoil.

I've shot countless rounds through my trusty old 500 and hadn't been bruised or hurt by the recoil, then one day I decided to play with some 3" slugs...ow. Now, I'd shot slugs before and thought the recoil was stout but manageable, but those were 2 3/4 inch shells. These 3" monsters bruised my shoulder through a heavy jacket despite having the gun tight against my shoulder. It also felt like i was being socked in the cheek on every shot, due to the tight cheek weld I use.

Maybe my technique is bad, but it's served me well for years. If I had a reason to continue shooting those particular shells I'd certainly be looking for a recoil management system.

WOW........the BS is FLYING off the shelves around here.......OUCH!

Healthy, technique, etc...............WHAT?!?!?! really now.......

and the whole idea of making a Saiga a safe queen is really funny............a Purdey I can understand, a Saiga? REALLY?........WOW

Yeah I knew I would get guff for retiring the saiga to the safe, but I am just concerned about possible BATF importation bans. If it gets banned I wanna keep it in the best shape I can because I will not be able to replace it. I guess it would not be a total safe queen but it would defiantly not be in the home defense plan.

Not to mention if everything went wrong and I had to use the saiga in home defense I would hate to have it in a property room during the investigation :(

I had one of those surefire forends on the breach gun I carried. The buttons work pretty well but the pressure switch is rediculously sensitive and I ended up cutting it out of the grip. But if its sitting under a bed i'm sure it will work fine.

I'm with Lee,again.

Technology cannot substitute for expertise.

Get the thing fitting you, shoot it plenty.

When the pile of empty hulls passes your shins, then decide if you need a gadget.......

It sounded to me like OP has a PGO model and would lke a shoulder stock. IMHO that's totally reasonable. If he wants a stock with a recoil gadget on or in it then why not? It is his money after all.

If he had a brand new shotgn with a standard stock on it I'd agree with you guys that he should shoot it a bunch before deciding he needs a recoil device, but that's not the case here. He wants to buy a stock, why not spend a few extra bucks and get one with a recoil device in it? If it turns out he didn't need the recoil device, what's the harm?

Oh, agreed, completely. It isn't much good as-is. My only real qualm is that the pistol-gripped versions don't work very well with the Mossberg safety. Not a deal-killer, but quite annoying.

After research and though process i am going to go with a traditional style stock. I am going to see if my dad's old stock off of his maverik 88 fits the 500 for now. I think the speedfeed I is more my style.

And to keep the shotgun at hands reach instead of in the basement in the safe i plan on.

Well, that's certainly a reasonable option (and FREE, sounds like). Get in as much practice as you can. You can always try the recoil absorbing stock later if you want to. You might even find someone nearby who has one on a Mossberg and you can try it out.

Now go put some lead downrange! :)
