So I think I made a mistake. I just bought a rifled slug barrel for my mossberg model 835. I think I should of bought a smooth barrel with rifle sights. I bought this barrel for deer hunting. I didn't realize that the rifled barrel is for sabots and not rifled slugs. The sabots are so expensive!!! You guys think I should send the barrel back and get a smooth bore slug barrel that I can shoot cheap Winchester super x rifled slugs? Need some advice.

Do you handload? If not, is it in your budget to get set up to start?

I have not yet personally tried these, but they might be worth a try. http://slugsrus.com/store/product75.html

BPI also has quite a selection and offers data for many of their slugs for all three 12 ga hull lengths.

Also, if you can get into casting, you can create your own sabot slugs for pennies each. Both Lyman and Lee make molds that cast a slug that fits in a trap wad/hull.

If you're unwilling or unable to get into rolling your own, Brenneke makes some more affordable slugs that are intended for both smooth and rifled bores.

Pony up and buy the sabots! I don't think that you are going to shoot enough rounds to make it worth "leading" up a rifled barrel. Try Remington's Accutips..they are about 10 bucks a box of 5 but will pattern well at 100.

I agree with blackDdefense.

How many sabot slugs are you going to shoot at deer once you get it sighted in.

A five round box should be enough for five deer!

you will find that rifled barrel with sabots to be more accurate and more capable at longer ranges.

You may think you're gonna shoot a lot of slugs, but trust me on this, with a pump you probably will not shoot it much at all.

Not very many men can handle much slug shooting.

:neener:

yea you guys are right. Im going to keep the barrel. Once its sighted in I wont be shooting it much. If I want to I can always put my 18-1/2" cylinder bore barrel on and shoot those cheap rifled slugs at the range. thanks for all your input!!!

ya you probably wont be shooting many slugs cause of the recoil but I would probably try some of both, remington, winchester, and brenneke make non saboted slugs for rifled barrels and at 100 yards or less the sabots may not be worth it but they can have an advantage at longer ranges.
