Been looking for a new shotgun. Thought about a semi auto and have been trying to get some info on the Mossberg 930. Anyone shine a little light on this model? Owners only please. No stories of a friend of a friend. Need first hand accounts on reliability.

Have an SPX since they first came out. Mine did not have any of the problems with the front sight being canted (they have apparently worked out that problem with the new ones) and I have 5k+ through it so far. I am LE and put it through torture tests every time I take it out, and it has performed great. If you get a brand spanking new one, make sure you give it a good cleaning before taking it out the first time. They use a preservative that rivals cosmoline for stubborness in removal. Start out with some heavy (1400 fps) loads first to break it in, and after that it will eat just about anything. I have had several other semi's and have gotten rid of them because this is the softest shooting semi I have ever owned.

Smitty should be along soon to add his .02.

Clean before shooting. Listen to the manual when it says don't pull the trigger before disassembly. The chamber loaded indicator isn't retained when the hammer is forward.

Break in with regular to heavy loads.

The Remington 870 sling plate will fit up front (non included with the SPX).

Some brands of shotshell are longer than others; if you like Federal LE132-00 for example the capacity drops by 1 unless the spring is replaced with a M500 spring. Nothing terrible, and an easy fix.

If you want 7+1+1 capacity, the 930 can be 'ghost loaded' with a round on the shell lifter.

I've got 3 Mossberg 930's; 1 - 930SPX & 2 - Walnut stocked models, I've shot over 20,000 rounds between the three guns over the last 3 or so years.

The only two problems I've hade were, one time I didn't put the bolt handle all the way back in after cleaning and sometime during the next round of shooting it went missing, didn't affect the gun at all but I lost the bolt handle. I contacted Mossberg to buy another, they sent me two for free....

The second issue I had was, I swapped barrels and went shooting only to find that forgot to swap the pistons, so the gun became a single shot....

SO, other than two operator induced malfunctions I have never had a single failure.

I shoot Remingtom 7/8 oz Game & Target loagds or hand loads that are similar and don't have a problem....
