I know everyone has their favorite AR platform, I've been reading just about evry post for the last few weeks. I know S&W comes highly as does a few others for entry level, or for guy like me that can't afford to spend a lot on one gun. SO...

Anyone have the new Mossberg AR platform rife, either the hunting or M4 version? I'd like to know how it performs. If I buy an AR type, it won't be just to learn the gun and go up to more expensive, it would be my basic farm/ home/ coyote/ truck rifle like my lever gun is. And I don't care about a zombie apocolypse, but I do care about the meth heads coming out to the country now and breaking in when people are home.
 
Mossberg's quality control? What issues do you infer?

Most every model gun that they put out has more examples with serious flaws than those put out by other manufacturers.

Just as an example, their 930 series shotguns. Many SPX models come with extremely misaligned sights.

And then there is their 930 JM "Pro Series" shotguns....I finally got one, only to find out that the magazine tube was dented so badly that the follower couldn't pass it. And I am not the only one that has had this problem with this model.

For the price that they are selling their ARs....there are much better options.

I agree. I've been using Mossberg products for years and have not noticed any problems.

+1 on Mossberg quality here. I agree that, for the MMR price tag, you can get more established brands of ARs. However, those who own them are having good experiences generally.
 
I'm jealous of those of y'all who haven't had any problems :cuss:

I got my 930 JM for 3-gun competition and was so excited....until I tried to function test it and ran upon the major dent...

The only Mossberg that I own that hasn't given me trouble is this one (except accuracy with a 4" sight radius is kinda diminished) :neener:

The dent was Mossberg's fault? Or was it the store's fault for dropping it? Or was it the shipping company for throwing the box across the room? It sucks, of course, and I don't fault your irritation, but UPS was the outfit that destroyed my M95 Mannlicher and Western Field 780 stock.

As to AR's, I'd also recommend going with a known name. In any case, I doubt Mossberg actually makes an AR. Certainly they, like so many others, use the limited number of parts manufacturers to provide their gear. It wouldn't surprise me to discover that the Mossberg was just a DPMS or other such rifle rebranded.

The fact that it has happened on mulitple guns and has been a recorded problem with this model shotgun makes it Mossberg's problem. I am not trying to start a fight, but Mossberg is not a perfect manufacturer of firearms, they have their problems; many of which can be found by doing a simple google search.

And there is no way that this part could have been dented in shipping because there was another metal sleeve around it that was not dented or marked in any way.
 
Then Mossberg has rightfully earned your ire. Yet, I own two 500's, three 810's, two 800's, two 340's, a 352, and a 183d bolt action 410.

They all have functioned 100%. The 183 belonged to my dad when he was a kid.
 
Ash, I might sound spiteful towards Mossberg, but I am not. The dented magazine tube was a fairly easy fix, and the gun has functioned well since then.

I would not hesitate to purchase a 500 or a 590, as I have never had a problem with either of them. My point to the OP was just that in the price range that Mossberg is selling their ARs, there are other manufacturers that have not had the recent problems that Mossberg has.

If given the chance to run one of their ARs and give a first-hand review on it, I would without hesitating; but I would be hard-pressed to purchase one with my own funds for the time being.

*To Mossberg's credit...they are dang creative with what they design and sell
 
I honestly didn't even know that Mossberg made AR's before this post. I would stick with something more proven and commonly used if it were me.
