they have interchangeable barrels so you can go w/ SD or long barrels, chokes, etc.

The Maverick 88 is an excellent little pump gun. I have one myself.

Every part that fits a Mossberg 500 is interchangeable with the Maverick EXCEPT the trigger assembly, as the safety is a cross trigger type instead of a topside slide safety.

I actually prefer the Maverick's safety to the Mossberg 500's. When I was in the Navy, and had the M500 slung, the safety was always getting knocked off by things on my belt, never had that issue with my Maverick.

You also want to look at the manufacture date, I'm not sure of the year they changed it, but the older models only had one bar from the pump grip into the receiver, newer models have two, like the M500.

Overall, a very inexpensive pump gun that will last you a very long time if you take care of it.

They are a good shotgun as others have noted.
I bought mine about eight years ago because it was blued instead of matte like the Express 870.
Another reason I bought mine was because it was cheap enough that if it started raining or a dust storm kicked up while hunting I wouldn't be sweating it like I would a more expensive wood furniture shotgun.
Not to mention at that time the price was $139.00 vs $199.00 for the Express.
And I have had previous experince with a Mossberg 500 which is another well made field piece.
I for one like the tang mounted safety on the Mossberg and wished they would have done the same on the Maverick.
And since Maverick decided to place a crossbolt safety on it I wished it would have been behind the trigger guard like the 870 instead of in front of it.
Mine has never missed a beat or malfunctioned and has knocked down a slew of doves over the years.
