What have you guys found to be your most accurate surplus 223 and 308 rnds? I used to do nothin but spray it all in the hillside and didnt worry about accuracy cause all i had to do was just walk the bullets in to the target. Now i got into the bolt gun scene for the last yr or so and fell in love and have tons litteraly of surplus and ill be damn if im gonna buy match ammo when i have all this layin around and some of it is extremely accurate for what it is.

In 5.56 i preffer South african, it does best in my daughters Savage 10FP, does real good.

In 308 i like Port FN, i havent tried the Lithuanian, have several cases of it but yet to open any crates, they say its REAL good.

Wish the Hirtnburger was still around, it was as good if not better, MAYBE then the port.

OK, am I the only one here who has ammo envy? Dude, where are you getting all that?

When you have couple beltfeds to feed, couple other handheld F/A's, 3 daughters and a wife who love to shoot, and when you attend KCR and OFASTS every yr and shoot 30,000 rnds in a days time, plus host shoots at your place...you go threw ammo, so it only makes sense to buy it by the tractor trailor/pallets at a time. You get it cheaper that way anyhow. Of course i havent bought that much at one time in about 2 yrs, with prices the way they are you can understand why, and also understand why i tried the bolt gun thing. HA

I've got about a thousand rounds of South African and Portuguese .308. However I have not shot any of it yet. When I do, it will be out of my FAL. Which probably isn't as accurate as the ammo or is on par with it.

And just to make you guys feel bad...I only paid 17.5 cents a round for it - last month! I got real lucky on that though. :)

Myrockfight, the South african 308 is reliable as hell, but just isnt as accurate as the other surplus, its still gonna hit a man at 600 yrds, just harder to hit em in the head everytime like your port will, Port is the POO!

Although I really like the Portuguese M/961, I've also found that the Czech ZV69 ammo is really good. Of course, it's corrosive, so you need to attend to your cleaning carefully, but it's full power and quite accurate...

It's fantastic. Clean, accurate, reliable and reloadable.

Wish I had a few more cases.

I posed that question about 308 a year or so ago. Here's what I was told. It seems to be true in my 308's anyway. (most accurate to least)

1. Lake City(good luck finding it)
2. Portugese
3. Aussie
4. South African
5. British
6. 70's date coded Indian
7. Anything else not already mentioned except Indian NOT from the 70's.
8. Post 70's Indian.

3,4, & 5 will change positions depending on exact rifle.

.308: Porty and SA. But it's gone unless some bunker is dug up with more.

5.56mm: Spanish NATO .223 SS109, Lake City and Swiss 5.56. Lake City still shows up from time to time.

All this stuff is 'combat accurate'. If you want precision, then you'll need match grade or handloads.

Fortunately, I've still got a few cases/battle packs of each.

i dont even see much surp .308now other than lith but i dont consider that surplus since ive heard its new manufactured

it sucks i missed on the days of 20 dollar sa battle packs i see them going for 80 at shows now

anyone know the going rate of port 7.62x51 ?

i picked up 40 rounds today for 22 bucks at the gun show its all the cash i had on hand

for 5.56, it's not to show off, but honestly the Swiss GP90 must be the most precise surplus ammo ! (when you find it..) It's a match grade ammo we shoot in the army.

The port may not be "Match ammo" but its so close it doesnt pay to buy match when i have cases of it layin around. I am gonna reload some match rounds, just havent got the gear yet, untill then ill shoot the stash i have untill its gone then reload or buy.

Actually, the Japanese produced military 5.56x45mm ammo is about as good as you can get...

Good luck finding any...

The Swiss GP90 or whatever IS extremely good, but i still stick to my guns on the SA 223. I also have some Portugese FN 5.56 M193, Thats as accurate as the port 308 is, rare as hens teeth now days but damn good. The SA 223 is just my favorite all around, anyone got some they want to trade ammo for any other ammo like 223, 308 or 8mm i have a bunch and will trade for SA battle packs.

I get better accuracy with the surplus then i do the commercial ammo, but i havent tried the match grade stuff either.
