Ranked in order, what are the most common cartridges for deer (getting at ammo availability)? Did I get it right?

#1 30-06
#2 .308
#3 .270
#4 7mm
#5 .243
#6 .260
#7 7mm-08

Probably differs by geographical locations, but if I compiled a list it would look a lot like yours-- both calibers and order.

John

Thanks JWarren

Thanks JWarren. I knew I got it pretty close. Seems like I can never find 7mm08

Good list, but you forgot the 30-30. Most firearms enthusiasts sniff at it, but on the east coast and to a certain extent in the south, its a very important deer killer.

Most popular deer cartridges.

I agree with the comment about regional preferences. I have kept informal track, especially in the old days in PA when you had to list on the door of your deer camp, what evrybody was shooting. In Western PA, itusually went something like this:

#1 30-06
#2 30-30
#3 .270
#4 .243
#5 7mm Mag
#6 .308
#7 35 Remington
#8 300 Savage

25 06 before the 7 mm, 260 is still regional in usage right now. I would also say that the 300 winmag, would be on that list before the 7 08 and the 260.

My guesses:

30-06
270
30-30
7mm mag
243
308

Those would probably account for 90 or 95 percent of rifle shots fired at deer*.

*Because of the laws, in many of the counties in my state of Virginia, shotgun shells are the only thing used for deer.

I forgot completely about 30-30!

My father always told me that he read somewhere that more deer have been killed with a 30-30 than any other rifle, according to something he read once.

I've never owned one, but seems to be a decent brush gun.

Yeah, 30-30 needs to be near the top, possibly AT the top, just because of the sheer number of guns still in use (at least in the northern/northeast) part of the country.

ArchAngel,

Putting 35 Remington on your list kinda surprised me... not disagreeing with you, mind you. But I can't think of a single person in my area to own a 35 Remingtion.... pretty rare caliber down here in the SE.

Only reason I have bothered checking was because once I wanted to get a Thompson Contenter pistol in 35 Remington...

Down here, I'd say that it looks a lot like:

30-06
270
308
7mm
30-30

A lot of us own stuff like 7.62X39, 5.56, and 300 WM, but not a lot of hunting goes on with those.

I've considered using hunting rounds in 7.62X39 for a brush round (read: less than 30 yard shot.) 5.56 isn't legal to hunt with in my state, and 300 WM is quite frankly too large for most of the deer around here... if you still want some meat.

Probably ought to add to the list just for fun some non-30 calibers-ish rounds:

22 rimfire.... EVERYONE here has at least one
12 gauge.... EVERYONE has at least one
20 gauge.... there is a loyal following to this shell.
243.... used a lot for youth's first rifle around here... and for the wife often
25-06... same as above

As mentioned the 30-30, would probably be in the first or second place. It might not be what most of us would use but the .22lr would have to be in the top five on just sheer number of deer taken with it.

.223

I didn't list .223 because I wasn't sure how much it is used for deer. Cyrano

Here in Colorado, ammo availability seems something like this:

#1: .30-06
#2: .270
#3: 7mm Rem Mag
#4: .300 Win Mag
#5: .308
#6: .25-06
#7: .30-30
#8: .243
#9: 300 RUM
#10: 7mm WSM/.300 WSM

One thing can certainly be counted on, though; No matter how backwoods the little general store is, they're likely to have .30-06 on the shelf.;)
