Mounting a scope with top closing rings??

I just acquired a new 22...a Mauser 201. It came with a set of top closing rings. I've never mounted a scope with this type of ring. Any suggestions? I looked on line and can find nothing. Do you attach them to the scope first then slide them on the dove tail? Is it something obvious I'm failing to see? That's often the case for me. I'll appreciate any help.
 
If you are talking vertically split rings you mount the scope in the rings with the screws barely threaded, then attach the rings to the rifle and tighten. Some people cannot stand vertically split rings but I prefer them and use Warne.

I like them also, scopes seem to try wiggle around less in vertically split rings when your tightening them down.
 
Yes, they are vertically split rings. Hope they work out well since the are already paid for. Another site referred to them as a PIA. We'll see. The scope is in transit and I'll have it soon.

What brand did you get?
The trick to using split rings is once youve got them attached to the scope, and your rifle leveled, you set them in place and tighten the bottom rings. Check to make sure you can still rotate the scope, if they are good rings like the Warnes Cdb1 likes, usually you take the lower screws to spec and the scope will still be loose enough to rotate.
On the set of leupold riflemans i just used they held the scope a little to securely to rotate it without loosening them some. If thats the case loosen the lower screws just enough to level your scope, then tighten them up to spec before going on to the top screws.

I think alot of the trouble folks have is they try to tighten the top and bottom screws intermittently and they end up with scope rings that are loose on their bases. Or either the rings, or bases are out of spec, and since they scope rings tighten down to both the scope and the base as a whole unit they end up a little loose.

Yes indeedy. With some rings(Weaver being by far the worst to me), once you get the scope level the scope will rotate when you are tightening the screws. This doesn’t happen with vertically split rings, at least not with Warne.
 
My examination of the rings yielded no identifying marks. The satin finish that works nicely with the overall finish of the rifle, both barrel and stock. Can't wait to get the scope.
 
cool, ive got i think three, nope, four different brands of vertical split rings now...go figure, and even the cheap chinese ones have been good.
 
I prefer the vertical split and the Warne in particular. Especially their Maxima QD return to zero quick release rings. 3C
 
The rifle came from Germany. My brother bought it while living there for 6 years and recently gifted it to me. He cannot recall what rings he put on it, but he only buys quality stuff, so the rings should be good. Thanks for your interest.
 
Any pics? Talley would be my guess for more popular in Europe as their line-up includes a large number of specific fitment for overseas manufacturers. Not sure if they mark their OEMs, but very nice rings as well.
 
haven't photographed this gun yet. i'm hobbled with my dominant arm in a sling due to recent shoulder surgery, so i'll be slow on this project for a few weeks. don't know how to post pics anyway

I have vertical Warnes and Tally rings and love them. Think they look better also.
