So I have my little Marlin 981t 22lr rifle. I have never had a rifle with a scope, much less mounted one, which is exactly what I intend to do to my marlin.

According to Marlin, my rifle accepts:

Scope Mounting Bases for Marlin bolt action rimfire rifles with drilled and tapped receivers. Designed for use with Weaver-style rings.

If I wanted to get a base for my scope at Academy or Wal Mart, what would it be called? Just a weaver-style base? Will any one fit my rifle? Are quick-detach usefull? How about see-thru? I like irons too.

In addition to this, I would need 1" weaver rings and a scope, obviously. Am I on track here?

Also, I am considering a cheap red-dot. Some of the red-dots say they use a "weaver-style mount." Does this just mean I use the same mount as I would with the scope, sans rings? Are these $50 red dots any good?

Thanks for the info

walmart has some decent cheap stuff. there are 2 sizes of rails tho. the red dot scope i believe is for the smaller rail only and the larger rail is the common one. once youve got the base then any weaver rings will work fine. try to get the base that has the smaller rail in the center of the regular rail, that way the reddot can mount too.

the quick detach rings are good. you can remove the scope for whatever reason(cleaning or switching to red dot) and the scope zero will be pretty close to the same as when you removed it. it wont be exact but with a 22lr ad shooting under 50 yards itll be very close to spot on.

so far my favorite walmart scope is the bushnell 3-9 with the triplex reticule(sp?). its the best 22lr scope ive ever has for under 100 bucks.
