I was interested in getting an semi-auto rifle, probably AR platform. I know Robinson arms makes their XCR in 5.56/6.8spc/6.5g, but I was wondering who else makes one. I think its just a matter of a barrel and bolt change, but who else makes them. This can also include bolt guns (I think desert tactical or something like that makes a bolt system/multiple barrel). Also, if you have FIRST HAND experience, please edumacate us...Thanks

Everybody in the AR platform, lot's of people do .204, .223, 6.8. Then you have AA with their 6.5 and .50, RRA and others with the .458 Socom etc. The only good thing about the AR is you can get one lower with a good trigger and get used to that trigger. Quality uppers cost about as much as a new bolt action rifle if not more.

thanks! Completely forgot about that option. I was thinking about just a simple barrel/bolt change vs. an entire upper. You're right about the cost of a complete upper...wow

I have the Robinson XCR in 5.56 NATO and 7.62x39. Piece of Cake change over, undo one bolt, replace barrel, retighten, replace bolt, replace ejector done. I can do the barrel swap in about 2 minutes, the most difficult being the brass deflector (2 bolts).

Big advantage, my optics/sights are still accurate enough up to 300 yards to not need any serious adjustments. It's $600 for the conversion, but it feels like the same rifle. So I'm happy with that.

YMMV

+1 for what Browningguy said.

With the basic AR platform you will find a huge supply of parts from very many different sources. You can put just about any caliber from .22 LR to .50 BMG on top of a basic AR lower.

Staying with the AR, and not a specialized type of rifle, allows you to use uppers made by a lot of other firms. The swap of, for example, an DPMS .204 Ruger upper to an Olympic 5.56mm will take less 30 seconds. You could then put a 7.62x39mm upper on in another 30 seconds. You have just covered your needs from varmint to coyote to deer in under a minute.

I don't like to get trapped by one manufacturers particular system.

Off the top of my head, just the XCR and LMT MRP support true caliber conversions. The SCAR has the potential too
