muzzle brakes

Without a brake indoors on even a carbine it's LOUD!
Roughly 10-12 Db quieter at the shooters ear, it's not bad with muffs and plugs.
You should try 338 Lapua Mag indoors with a brake. Its an interesting experience, even with plugs and industrial muffs.
Guy was shooting a RPR with the factory brake at the 25 yard indoor range a while back, he actually works there. Honestly didn't seem much worse than my SBR, either way 1 round was enough to chase me out.

I have never been in an indoor range. The drive to one is too long for me. I understand a gunshop in the county's largest town about 25 miles south of me is constructing one. I have no interest in making use of it.
For me, my outdoor range is 25 miles each way and recent weather has made crossing the creek risky enough that they’ve closed it numerous times this year. (Back open now though  ) Since I am not a full member (3 year waiting list) I can only go there fri-sat.

The nearest desert site is 60+ miles each way, to a free for all shooting spot. Anywhere else legal to shoot without Tactical Teds and Homie the Clowns running amok is another 30+ miles out.

My closest indoor range is 3 miles away. I’m there 2x a week.

It’s not ideal, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do sometimes. Rifle noise is loud, but I double plug/muff and it’s not abusing . Some guys just push to to the painful zone with the comps, and don’t seem to care. It’s those I am not enamored with.

Stay safe.

I run the VG-6 gamma on all of my AR's. They do a good job and I don't have worry about what the state of CA thinks.

Now, if you want to talk about muzzle blast... I have to warn people next to me at the range.

The blast can blow your rifle off the bench!

Yes, AR-50 in 50 BMG.

A friend had his .50 upper on one bench, grabbed his Serbu BFG and shot it on the next bench.

The muzzle blast blew the .50 upper with lower and scope off the bench!

He picked up the upper, chambered a round, and hit the 400 yard target. Other then getting some scratches, the rifle was good to go.

It's been 30 years since I shot a 50 caliber rifle. If my memory is correct, we only shot them from the prone position and usually had sand bag right behind the bipod. The memory part is if we sand bagged them and where. I do remember only shooting from the prone position.

My two different 50BMG rifles are the only guns I own that NEED brakes. The bolt action Windrunner is a complete pussycat to shoot, whereas the GM6 Lynx is designed around the factory brake. Either fifty will blow full bottles of water off of adjacent benches, thus my warning to late arrivals to avoid the blast areas.. The first gun has been enjoyed by a number of kids, but the Lynx is for experienced rifle shooters and masochists only.

I would love to shoot the Lynx, one of a couple .50's that I haven't shot.

The Windrunners are one of the most amazing. 50's ever made! Just wish Bill was still with us.

His son is still making .50's but he has his own semiauto .50. I know he will do some work on the WR, don't think he makes them though.

LMK if you're ever around central Iowa.

I do wish folks wouldn’t use comps indoors. Rifles are loud enough, but it’s acceptable. Comps sending extra noise and blast to those on either side is obnoxious.

I just shot yesterday and some dude with an AR-10 .308 sporting a 16” barrel and a side-discharging comp set up two lanes over to my left. (The guy to my immediate left was shooting a .40 I believe.)

AR-10 guy would stick the barrel six inches past the end of the side plates between the lanes and the blast would make the lid on the box of .22 on my shelf flutter. It was so bad that the blast from guy in the lane next to me on my right shooting a Desert Eagle .44 was tame in comparison.

I guess if the AR-10 guy had been even a halfway decent shot I might have put up with it a bit longer, but his blasting 10 shots and not keeping half of them in a 6” circle at 18 yards was pretty pathetic. I get better patterning from a 20 gauge shooting buckshot. 😞

Me and the guy between us cleaned up our fired cases and left the range at just about the same time. I think he was done, too.

Call it 19 years ago, I owned a 308 FAL carbine which had a permanently installed muzzle brake that brought it to legal barrel length and fit the AW Ban rules. It was loud outside it was really really loud inside. I lived in the Chicago suburbs at that time and brought it and a couple handguns to a local indoor shooting range. I started shooting with my handguns and then some yutes (they might've been wearing gang colors) started blasting away with their Bushmaster Carbon 15 AR pistol. Well I had to counter that and started blasting away with my FAL carbine.

They came running over to see what the heck was that cannon going off?

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Working overseas gave me the opportunity to move to rural Missouri where I bought a house with land. Now I have my own range in my backyard.
But to give you some perspective on rural living. The nearest stop light and Walmart for that matter, is 1 hour away (35 miles). If I want to shop at Costco or Sam's Club I need to drive 1.5 hours which is about 79 miles away.

Living in the Chicago area, I could easily spend 2 hours in traffic and hardly cover 20 miles. I bet California is the same way on Friday afternoon during rush hour.

Every morning, every afternoon, even mid-days on many freeways it’s a crawl. Something like 15-17 million people live in the megalopolis between Santa Barbara and San Diego, there is little escape. 😩

Indoor ranges are pretty common, I have shot at several over the decades since I moved down here.

I lived rural for many years. Between spending every summer for 18 years on the family ranch that was tucked on a two mile dirt road between Kerrville and Bandera, Texas I lived on a goat farm a few miles outside of Eureka, Ca in the late 1980’s.

We were pretty isolated back then. My best friend and I used to drive an hour and a half to play golf in Willow Creek, the winnner would get a slurpee. The nearest 7-11 store was across from Shasta College in Redding, which was roughly a five and a half hour round trip on a pretty winding highway (SR-299).

I saw one on an AR 10 recently where they turned the barrel after installation and it looked as if it was one piece, I liked that. I feel a brake allows you to keep your eyes on target better and sometimes even see the wave the bullet is making allowing better shooters (than I) to be more accurate.

Back during the ban Armalite put brakes on there AR10s instead of flash hiders to comply. I like it better than a flash hider as it keeps muzzle rise to a minimum. Is it louder? I suppose so but I shoot rifles out doors. As far as muzzle blast I have learned that good hearing protection is key. Over the years I have also learned to not pay attention to the guy next to me shots. Focus on y own. I just grin when I'm at the indoor range with my .357 mags and some one says "wth is that?" well they are usually the ones with fricking foam plugs for hearing protection. I to was once young and dumb and hunted without hearing protection. Dirt bikes and hot rods didn't help. Guess that's why I can't hear without aids. Invest in quality hearing protection and even double up to make it better...
