$20 savings. I'm not seriously looking at trying it, I have enough 40 bullets for now just wondering about possibilities.

Those spitzer bullets are too long to work in an auto pistol.
Even seated short to the end of the ogive, they will be too long to fit in the magazine, or feed.

They just might work in a 10mm with reduced loads. But then the bullet might not even stabilize, anyway. What's the twist rate in a .40 cal muzzleloader?

1) I would be careful with 200gn bullets in .40S&W, but I remember all the warnings about 200gn bullets in .40 S&W back when it came out and never felt a need to test it.
2) Be careful with COL and length of bullet in the case, reducing the case volume. I would be sure to start at the lowest starting load I could find
3) Twist rate in .40 will be high enough to stabilize.
4) You could call Hornady and ask

As thinking the same thing, you would be crimping past the straight part.
