Man opens fire on deputies, gets Tasered

COURTLAND—A Carrsville man is in jail after trading gunshots with a Southampton County deputy Thursday evening.

Freddie Carroll Drake, 52, of Burdette Road, was charged with discharging a firearm within a dwelling, a felony, as a result of the incident. Sheriff’s department spokesman Richard Morris said other charges are pending.

Deputy Scott Griffith responded to a 911 report of shots fired in a residence on Monroe Road near Statesville at about 6:20 p.m. Thursday.

When Griffith arrived on the scene, a shot was fired outside from within the building. The deputy took cover, and Drake emerged from the house into the yard with a shotgun aimed at him, Morris said.

Griffith returned fire and missed. Drake immediately dropped his weapon and began advancing toward the deputy, who then used his Taser to subdue the man, Morris said.

Drake was taken to Southampton Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released for cuts and abrasions he had suffered inside the house.

Morris said no one else was in the home at the time of the exchange and that there were no other injuries.

Since it was an officer-involved shooting, the incident remains under investigation, Morris said, adding that he could not remember another instance of a deputy firing his weapon at a suspect in his 15 years as a member of the department.

“We are relieved no one was injured,” he added.

Griffith has been a deputy in Southampton for about 3 1/2 years and served on police forces elsewhere before he joined the sheriff’s department, Morris said. He remains on duty during the investigation.

Drake is being held without bond in the Southampton County Jail.

Wow, I read that whole arcticle, and still have no idea what happened. There are so many unanswered questions I don't know where to begin. The fact he was not charged with attempted murder of an officer, and about a hundred other crimes makes little sense, the fact he is still breathing is also a miracle. Good thing no-one was killed or seriously injured over whatever transpired to cause this. There is too little information to even tell who the guilty party is. I know around here, someone that takes a shot at an officer will look like swiss cheese in fairly short order, if and when they recover they will face years of prison time, trials and so-on. The one thing that does not happen, is a swift release from the hospital and heading home with basically a felony AD charge.

First, your ex step brother is a moron.

Second
he could not remember another instance of a deputy firing his weapon at a suspect in his 15 years as a member of the department.

Well then, why do police need guns at all?

It rather sounds as though Deputy Griffith (and possibly the entire Sheriff's department) should think about spending a bit more time at the range.

Sounds like that deputy should be commended for his extremely good judgment. Faced with a shotgun wielding somebody's-ex-brother-in-law he managed to make an arrest and end the danger without killing anyone. Kudos to a fast thinking and level headed peace officer.

The deputies out here carry 45s.

Griffith was on scene alone.

Freddy has had issues in the past, though nothing this severe. Disabled from a back injury, takes heavy meds. Drinks. Wife threw him out a few years ago. His dad died 3 years ago Sunday. I used to think he was unstable. Now I have proof. He was at his GF's house, but she was not home.
