I'm a revolver fan. I love my Ruger SRH .454 Casull. I love my Ruger GP100 6". I my SP101s.

My fiancee abjectly dislikes revolvers which is something I have accepted since she likes 1911s. My gun for her is my STI Spartan V .45 ACP 1911. I actually zeroed the sights to twenty feet for her (I feel odd about that fact but she can now hold a four inch grouping at 20 feet) with 230 grain Wolf FMJ. She actually shot her best ever last Saturday.

I have a Sig 228 (a West German production) 9mm that I had been hoping she would take on as her carry gun but monkey see monkey do came in as she watched me shoot one-handed with the gun with my right hand (I'm left handed and I prefer to shoot one-handed with semis in 9mm, I've found it helps me keep my powerful caliber shooting in better consistency) and so now she will only shoot the Sig 228 one-handed with her left hand (she's right handed). I can't convince her to use two hands and she has a hard time holding the 9 ring on a target at twenty feet when shooting one handed (she still managed to shoot better than at least half the guys at the range).

After she did incredibly well (for her) with the Spartan (she first started shooting .45 in my Ruger P345) she's made it clear she only likes the trigger pull of 1911s.

On one hand my fiancee likes to go shooting and better yet likes 1911s (two things we have in common). But she's limiting her selection of firearms to 1911s. Now there is no shortage of variety to 1911s but it seems odd she would limit herself so much. And as happy as I am she's improving with the .45 ACP caliber, she's still far off from using it for SD. Till she started the one-handed habit she could empty the Sig 228's 13 rounds in ten seconds (I know very slow but). With the 1911 she takes about five seconds per shot. Her excuse is if the person is close to her she'll just aim for the stomach and only stop shooting till its empty. I just don't care for that mentality. It seems reckless and dangerous. I've never had her rapid fire my .45s as I don't think she has the control down yet.

With a 1911 in 9mm she promises to shoot it only two handed (if she doesn't then I'll have 1911 in 9mm) and to start practicing SD at the range (shoot two shots per second at least at targets at twelve yards).

My fiancee is only 5'6" but she can't IWB carry, the gun would show on her frame and she wants to purse carry so the 1911's size and weight really isn't an issue. Oh and the only Kimber she wants is a Grand Raptor (it's more of the color scheme being pretty to her and it having adjustable sights as opposed to anything else [I'm just happy she doesn't want a pink gun]), a guy at a gun show told her that it was the only good one as the others were only good for carrying and not shooting much so she got spooked (issue of steel frame versus alloy frame). The only Kimber product I've gotten familiar with is a buddy of mines Grand Raptor and he's had it for at least five years and it's been flawless for him, the four or five times I shot it it shot and handled well for me. So I can't counter the statement with confidence and so she's not interested in the more compact offerings amongst the Kimber catalog.

So my dilemma (yeah I know no one's heart breaks for the guy whose fiancee likes to go shooting and likes 1911s), is what steel framed 1911s are out there that won't break the bank that are 1911s in 9mm. I thought about .38 super but I don't want another caliber to shop and reload for. I finally got myself to start reloading 9mm.

The budget is $1,000. I've come to terms with the Taurus 1911 9mm but I'd like to avoid it if at all possible as I understand their parts aren't compatible with most other manufacturers. If a part wears out I'd like to be able replace it with an internal from Wilson or Browning (never actually done it before). I've thought about Rock Islands and their more sophisticated offerings but I just can't get into it. I wish Springfield would do a Range Officer in 9mm as that would satisfy my urges but since their frame as I understand it is a standard 1911 frame, could I per chance do a build myself [or hire someone] for a slide in 9mm with adjustable sights (it'd be expensive but I'd have two calibers in one gun possibly).

Anyone else got any ideas to get myself a steel frame 1911 9mm that isn't a Taurus, for under $1,000. Oh and has anybody done a at-home build for a slide in 9mm for their 1911 frame that was for a .45 ACP gun?

Also check out the Springfield "EMP". Smaller framed but comes in 9mm and .40s&w. Should price right around $1000.
