First, I apologize if this post is long. I Have been out of long range shooting for some time, and just bought a new DPMS LR308. I used to own a Ruger varmint rifle in 22-250, and a remington 700 in 308. I also used to re-load my own ammo. I have several questions for anybody who can answer.

1. My rifle had a slightly loose stock when I bought it. I figured all I would need to do would be tighten the screw on into the buffer tube, but when I went to do it, it was already extremely tight. I decided to remove it so that I could make a spacer or something and discovered it must have been cross threaded at the factory. After I finally got the screw out, the last 4 threads were stripped and the threads in the tube were stripped. I have contacted DPMS several times, but can't get any consistent responses through e-mail. Should I just call them? Has anyone else had similar issues with their customer service through e-mail?

2. As I said earlier, I always re-loaded my own ammo. I have had great accuracy results with my 22-250. Almost always under 1" 5 shot groups at 200 yards. I had poor results, in comparison, with the remington 700 in 308. My best was 1 1/2" at 200 yards, with the average being about 2". I used several good bullets, including speers gold match 168 grain, and sierra hpbt 150 grain match. I know DPMS doesn't allow, under warranty, the use of re-loads. But the warranty card says nothing about new hand-loads (I read the warranty card that came with the rifle several times, in case anyone decides to disagree). So, I plan to cook up some hand loads using new Lapua brass, cci primers, and some of the above mentioned bullets, and also some nosler ballistic tip 165 grain bullets. I will start off using RL 15 powder. Any comments on the ballistic tips? I used them in the 22-250 and they were unbelievable. Sometimes one hole groups at 100 yards.

3. I noticed when you load bullets into the magazine, that they sometimes get scratched up. And also there are dents in the neck of the case after firing. I smoothed out all the edges on the magazines, which seems to have helped with scratching the bullets, but I still get the dents in the case neck. Any ideas? Its definitely NOT the magazine causing the dents, and they are on the NECK, not the body of the case.

Sorry about the length of post, but any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't have much experience with autoloading rifles, but tons with bolt action. Thanks.

welcome to THR!
1. call em
2. should work fine
3. nothing in the mag should be scratching your bullets at all, but if you load and eject a round, the ejector pressure drags the bullet past the lugs which puts a nice scratch on it.
dents in the neck are normally caused by either too much lube built up inside the die when sizing (dent usually at shoulder/neck junction), or during ejection by banging against the shell deflector (dent usually at mouth)

Thanks for the warm welcome. The dents are on factory ammo. About 3/16" down from the mouth, or 1/8" from the shoulder. Something is scratching it and at the end of the scratch is a small dent. I think it may be as its being fed into the chamber, possibly the ramps going up to the chamber (forgive my lack of proper terminology, as I said, I am not an expert on autoloaders.....yet)

1. My experience with DPMS customer service on the phone has been nothing short of great. Experienced guys that want to make things right.

2. Haven't reloaded for my RRA LAR-8 yet, but 168gr Ballistic Tip reloads in my .308 MDL 70 have been disappointing. It was probably my load combo or recipe, but I got terrible groups with them. I switched to 165gr Sierra Game Kings, and haven't looked back.

3. Scratches and dents: I get some on my cases from the LAR-8, but I chalk it up to the violence of the action. That Bolt Carrier creates some pretty wicked inertia, and isn't delicate during the feeding/ejection process. I think the BCG could easily be used as a club if necessary. I think taliv is right about the brass deflector denting cases as well.

Thanks. I wanted to try the Noslers because I had such great success with them in my 22-250. And as I said, I didn't have much luck with the 150 grain sierra match kings or the 168 grain speer gold match. It has been a long time since I reloaded. I am hoping I am starting with some good rounds with the Lapua brass and the Noslers with the RL15. I will find out soon. Just wish the recommended break in wasn't such a pain in the arse.

Not to make this a reloading thread, but a somewhat over looked powder for the .308 that has really worked well for me is H335. I have heard good things about RL-15 though, so good luck.
