First, I apologize if this post is long. I Have been out of long range shooting for some time, and just bought a new DPMS LR308. I used to own a Ruger varmint rifle in 22-250, and a remington 700 in 308. I also used to re-load my own ammo. I have several questions for anybody who can answer.
1. My rifle had a slightly loose stock when I bought it. I figured all I would need to do would be tighten the screw on into the buffer tube, but when I went to do it, it was already extremely tight. I decided to remove it so that I could make a spacer or something and discovered it must have been cross threaded at the factory. After I finally got the screw out, the last 4 threads were stripped and the threads in the tube were stripped. I have contacted DPMS several times, but can't get any consistent responses through e-mail. Should I just call them? Has anyone else had similar issues with their customer service through e-mail?
2. As I said earlier, I always re-loaded my own ammo. I have had great accuracy results with my 22-250. Almost always under 1" 5 shot groups at 200 yards. I had poor results, in comparison, with the remington 700 in 308. My best was 1 1/2" at 200 yards, with the average being about 2". I used several good bullets, including speers gold match 168 grain, and sierra hpbt 150 grain match. I know DPMS doesn't allow, under warranty, the use of re-loads. But the warranty card says nothing about new hand-loads (I read the warranty card that came with the rifle several times, in case anyone decides to disagree). So, I plan to cook up some hand loads using new Lapua brass, cci primers, and some of the above mentioned bullets, and also some nosler ballistic tip 165 grain bullets. I will start off using RL 15 powder. Any comments on the ballistic tips? I used them in the 22-250 and they were unbelievable. Sometimes one hole groups at 100 yards.
3. I noticed when you load bullets into the magazine, that they sometimes get scratched up. And also there are dents in the neck of the case after firing. I smoothed out all the edges on the magazines, which seems to have helped with scratching the bullets, but I still get the dents in the case neck. Any ideas? Its definitely NOT the magazine causing the dents, and they are on the NECK, not the body of the case.
Sorry about the length of post, but any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't have much experience with autoloading rifles, but tons with bolt action. Thanks.
