My first two picked out!! Lots of questions!

Excuse me if I ramble but after my first trip to the range (an all day safety/training class) in over 15 years I feel like a kid again!!

I used everything from a Glock 17 to a Sig P239 to a 1911 and found that I liked the Glock 17 the best. I've decided to purchase a Glock 17 and a Glock 36 with many more to come in the future.

Now come the questions. Based on what I've read here and elsewhere I'll be using the Federal Premium Hydra-Shock 135gr JHP ammo (for the 9mm 165gr for the .45ACP) for defense loads.
I've heard lots about Walmart's Winchester white box deals but are they a good, clean round for the range? I don't mind spending a few more bucks to get a better round so I'm pretty confused about my options. I know, without a doubt, I won't be shooting CCI/Blazer. They had these at the range and out of 200 rounds 4 of them light-fired (a term the range instructor used).

What recommendations would you make for cleaning kits? Any aftermarket accessories that are a must-have? Thanks for the advice!

Nothing wrong with Winchester white box, I use it all the time. Also, get a bore snake. They work really good.

Ammoman for bulk buying of ammo. I personally like MPro7 for cleaning and CLP or LP for lube.

Miwall 9mm

Safado--

Your best deal for 9mm is Miwall reloads. I've shot over 3000 9mm copper plated and every one went bang. The stuff is definitely better than Blazer in my view.

All the brass was once fired. Miwall is located in No. Calif and they do some gunshows in Oregon. Cost is about $88 per thousand including an ammo can. You really can't go wrong with the stuff.

I was somewhat skeptical about the Miwall, but I actually checked my shooting log and I had fewer FTF or light primer strikes than with new PMP (So. African), Sellier/Bellot, and IMI.

The miwall stuff is loaded a little slow, so use it for range use, not defense. It cycles my g34 just fine though.

The thing I like about most of the Sigs and Glocks that I've shot is that they digest just about any half-decent ammo you feed them. I've tried all kinds of 9mm in my P228, but you just can't beat the Win USA 100-rd Value Pack from WalMart for basic 115 gr. FMJ 9mm range ammo. I also like the Win USA 147 gr. JHPs that they sell. Check out your local WalMart ammo counter to see what they have available in 9mm & .45 ACP, I'll bet those Glocks will run on any of it, then you know you have a good supply of reasonably priced ammo to choose from.

As far as cleaning supplies, I use a tornado brush, and then patches with a plastic slotted end on a basic aluminum cleaning rod; the only solvent I use is FP-10, an excellent CLP.

I don't have a 9MM, so I can't comment on that. The Winchester White Box (USA Brand) of .45ACP ammo works fine in both my Springfield Champion model 1911-A1 and my KP-90 Ruger. I have also had success with Sellier & Bellot, and PMC brand.

Not a fan of Blazer, but I have used some of it...works OK. The aluminum case is NOT reloadable, and the headstamp is so marked "NR".

White Box is not particularly clean. Perhaps you're thinking of Win-Clean ammo? (Win-Clean is less toxic, but usually less accurate).

The best deals in practice ammo are generally 1000 round cases by mail order. Look for deals with free shipping.

Recently I saw Greek made Olympic 124gr. military ammo for $119 per thousand, shipped. I like S&B, too.

Thanks for all the excellent recommendations! I guess I've still got a ton to learn because some of the terminology used confuses me.

I'm not opposed to cleaning--just want to make sure the white box ammo won't add unecessary wear and tear to the gun. What parts are involved in cleaning a Glock? I guess I'm looking for a starter kit that would have all the cleaning parts/oils/whatever I'd need to start me out.

Hey-

You can't beat the Winny white box at Wal-Mart. 100rd box for about $10, I buy ten or a dozen boxes every time I go in there. Shoots clean enough (what the heck, I clean my hardware every time I come home from the range. OCD will do that to ya)...

At least it's better than Blazer - which you might be tempted to buy (since a box of 50 will cost you, what? $4? ). That stuff seems to be made of melted down tin cans or something, and it leaves all kinds of guk in your shiny new handgun. I hate to think of how much Blazer shaving I've inhaled.
