Went by to visit with an old friend today.

When we were young, we spent a lot of hours in the woods, squirrel hunting, fishing and just being outdoors and enjoying each others company.

We have kept in touch over the years, and even though we are in our mid sixties, still manage to get in a squirrel hunt or two each year.

He mentioned he still has the Remington Model 572 Fieldmaster he hunted with all those years ago. "She don't shoot no more, but I keep her for the memories." he told me.

We dug the rifle out of his safe and I spotted the problem right away - the rifle had not had a thorough cleaning since it was bought brand new!

I brought the rifle home with me, stripped her down, cleaned her up, lubricated her lightly where needed, put her back together and now she shoots as good as new.

I am gonna take her back to him tomorrow and tell him to practice up, squirrel season opens soon and we are going to take the ol' gal out and make some more memories.

90% of firearms malfunctions are because the firearm are neglected and need a thorough cleaning. Well done.

Squirrel season?

There's a season on tree rats?
Thought that was any month with more than two letters in its name, or any day that ends in a "y"...

Anyway, congrats on getting the antique out shooting again...and the rifle, too. :)

Good for you. I have a friend since high school. We used to hunt and fish all the time, but work got the best of us. His Dad gave him an Ithaca 49 single shot .22 for Christmas and he got hurting for money and had to sell it to his sister. The gun is now in Salt Lake City. I got one several years ago for cheap so I called him up and told him next time he was close by to give me a call as I had something for him. I gave him that old rifle and boy you would have thought he won the lottery. He's been thru some rough times lately. That's what friends are for.
