I bought 2 new (to me) rifles. One is a Ruger M77 mk2 in 30-06 and the other is a Savage model 11 w/accutrigger in 7mm-08. I really like both. However, thanks to you guys I may have found my new favorite rifle cartridge in the 7-08. Light recoil and is a very enjoyable to shoot. I really scored when I found that the rings on the Savage allowed me to mount my 50mm Nikon! Sorry so long. My only question is why the 7-08 isn't more popular and do you think it will ever gain more popularity?

This is true. I'm all for the 7mm-08, but from a popularity standpoint the 270 wins. If I had to pick one of the two it would be the 7mm-08.

The 7mm08 closest competitor is it's parent the .308 which is a benchmark in American short action firearms in the hunting world as well as the military. I would agree that the 7mm08 is a super round. But the 30 caliber is America's baby and the 7 metrics have never and IMO will never dethrone the 30 cals. Even though 7mm is probably my favorite caliber for hunting the 30's are super also. Plus, remember the Spanish with thier 7x57 mausers shot our troops to pieces during the Spanish/American war. I'm sure that was a black mark against the 7mms way back then.

The 7mm-08 is a really nice round. I actually chambered an M1 Garand in the round. Flat trajectory and as mentioned light recoil. I load a lot of the stuff. :)

I like 7mm a lot and you only have to look at the popularity of 7x57 as a hunting round in Africa to see how well they can work.

For me, I feel the downside of the 7mm-08 is the lack of oomph for pushing heavy bullets.

That's why I have a 7x64. Everything the .270Win should be, and invented prior to it...

Marlin 30as 3030, Ruger M77 Mk2 3006 and Savage Model 11 7mm-08. :D I had to take picture of the Marlin so it wouldn't get jealous.

very nice. i also have a 336 and a 30-06 m77. only difference is mine is the hawkeye instead of the mk2. very nice rifles you have there!

I like the 7-08 too, great low recoil round and it is a very close rival to the 270 with 140gr bullets, there is less then 100fps difference between them. Just bought a new Browning A Bolt II 7-08, taking it to the range for the first time today :)

In post #128, I compiled some information that I gathered about various calibers. It doesn't include everything, but I tried to stay as objective as possible. I ranked them based upon how much velocity and energy they retain at longer distances (based on 1800fps/1000ftlbs as a standard of measure), though I did include other information, such as bullet trajectory, in the chart.

In essence, the 7mm-08 beat out the .260, the .30-06, the .270, and the .308. The only ones that ranked higher were the 7mm mag, .300 win mag, and the .264 mag. I had never even considered the 7mm-08 until this. Light recoil, sufficient energy and velocity to 500 yards, and an above-average trajectory. What's not to like?

The primary purpose of 'new' products including cartridges is to sell more rifles and cartridges.

Once a new cartridge has matured and sold about all the new extra guns then the mfg's move on to another 'new' cartridge.

The 7-08 is just fine. It's about like the old 7-57 and some others.

That's the fun of guns. Getting a new one and telling others about it.
