I haven’t posted on this board in quite some time… though I’ve been lurking quite a bit. Going forward, I really hope to be able to participate in some of the discussion on THR.

Anyways… Today I purchased a Ruger Single Six Convertible with a 5.5” barrel. All I can really say is that I love this revolver. I took her out to the range (informally plinked @ some steel plates) and put about 300 rounds down range.

I was looking for a new plinker and it ended up coming down to the MK-III or the Single Six. I really think both are excellent .22’s. I am extremely pleased with my decision to get the Single Six.

This revolver fits my hand like a glove, really accurate (again pretty informal today) and it’s always a plus when a tool just happens to be easy on the eyes. Another bonus is not having to load magazines or pick up the rimfire cases off the floor.

The Single Six is nice and clean, resting in the safe with her new family. My 642 is no longer the only revolver, amongst the rest of her semi-auto pistol cousins.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to which ammo runs the best in this revolver?

Since it isn't a semi-auto, it isn't ammo dependent for functioning.

For plinking, anything will do. I use the Wally World Federal bulk packs.

If accuracy is important to you, then you might try some premium ammo, and find the one(s) that work best in your gun. I find that even the cheap stuff gives me acceptable levels of accuracy, but your demands may be different.

Thanks for the reply... Reliability and not being a picky eater was also a deciding factor with going the revolver route in .22.

I tried out the following today:

Remington Supersonics (My least favorite out of the bunch)
Federal - American Eagle
Winchester Super X

For plinking they all did a fine job. I guess my question was more in regards to accuracy. My apologies for wording it so poorly.

CCI stingers did well in mine, and man do they hit critters hard, the only .22lr that I ever killed a coon with (from a pistol).

Those 60gr Aguilla SS are great but they start to keyhole after a certain range.

Every handgun - especially .22 rimfires, even two consecutively produced ones from the same maker - is a law unto itself as to which brand or type of ammo it will shoot most accurately. Buy some small quantities (one 50-round box is small and cheap) of each of whatever you want to shoot from it and try them out. You are most likely to get the best accuracy from a "match" load, but even that is not engraved in stone.

Stingers will drop a rabbit dead as fried chicken with a well placed shot. They are like the .357 mag. of .22lr, and accurate too. The W-Mart Federals are great practice with my Smith, but lack ultimate accuracy.

Let me send you another direction. Accuracy is a relative term, especially when considering distances. I handgun hunt with my Single Six, also stainless and 5 1/2". I use a red dot with a 3moa dot for fine work. I've found that the 30 gr Aguilla's are both flat and accurate and actually extend my range considerably. They give me near WMR velocity at much less cost. They are cheap compared to 22WMR's or 22lr match, but much more money than bulk ammo.

.22 Ammo

Micheal-2112: Sir you got a mighty fine shooting gun. Mighty Fine!:)
Most .22s are outstanding out of the box. Sometimes you will find a
box of brand x that it really really likes.
yummy.
Next box of brand x "what the dickens happened"
Not uncommon.
What seems to be the same; aint necessarily; so.:confused:
Lot # will give you the best average.
Find a Box that shoots/ look at box, and go back and see if the Lot# still available.

Micheal-2112: Take a look at Sportsman Guide. They have PMC Moderators for a very reasonable price and I would suspect you might be interested in something like 2500 rounds (or 5 bricks). These shoot good in many firearms and are standard velocity. I have bought two cases of them which should last me a while.

I really appreciate the suggestions. Mucho aprecio!

I just got back home from the range and still can't get over how nice the Single Six is. It just put a smile on my face the whole night. :)

I didn't want the others in the stable to get jealous so I brought along my 642, CZ 75B, and my Commander. One of my friends came along as well and brought his PPK, SP-101, and his MKII.

So lot's of guns and lots of shooting after a long day of work.

Thanks again for the suggestions...

22-rimfire: I certainly like the idea of getting about 5 bricks. The best part is that it's just so affordable, almost hard not to get a bunch.

Thanks,

Mike

MY Single-Six likes just about any of the plated ammo, hates the Remington plain lead "Thunderbolts".

CCI "Stingers" work very well in the 'ultra velocity' category, along with the Federal 'Spitfire'. Remington "Yellow Jackets" were so-so.

Federal bulk pack or the Federal "Amercian Eagle" brand have worked out best for me in the less expensive ammo column. Same for my MKII.

Now, my OLD Marlin 99 rifle loves the Rem Thunderbolts, hates the Stingers, OK with Fed Spitfire.

Each .22 gun and ammo combination is a law unto itself. Buy a box (50 or 100, package dependant), and go blaze away. You will eventually find a brand and style that is just the cat's meow for YOUR revolver.

Years ago, I had a Rem Nylon 66 rifle that ate anything you fed it, except for the Rem 36-Gr "Golden Bullet" HP. Choked on those every time. Go figure...a Remmy gun that hated Remmy ammo...

My Ruger like the CCI's mini mags and federal Bulk packs also. Never had any luck with Rem's ever.
