IMG_20200203_110158.jpg In the photo "Top" is my fist gun project that I did in the 90s. It's a Winchester 67A bolt action, single shot 22 made sometime before 1964. I got the gun from a co-worker along with a 410ga. Single shot for $35. I re blued the metal, stripped the wood and redid with stain and poly. The inside works were in good shape but sure needed a good cleaning. I know some don't like stain and poly on a gun but it's really held up good and still works perfect.
In center photo is my current project. A J. Stevens model 54, 410ga. Single shot, Bolt action. Made sometime between 1933 and 1942. Got it at a gun show about a year ago for $60. It was missing a bolt assembly. More than it was worth, I know. But had to have it. The wood was really nasty with all kinds of crap on it. But, No cracks or major dings. I stripped the wood and used tru oil. For some reason I don't like the tru oil. I don't know why. Maybe the way it went on. I guess it does what it's supposed to do and looks ok. I don't know. Right now it's on hold. I can't find the bolt ASSEMBLY for it. Been looking for a year. But I'm on a quest for it. I will find it sooner or later. Looking for the bolt has been a pain. But that's another story. I will post that later.
In bottom photo is my next project waiting in line. A Marlin, glenfield model 15, bolt action 22 single shot. It's not in real bad shape. The metal works inside are in good working shape and the barrel is nice and shinny inside. A good cleaning is needed. Have not decided if I will try a re blued yet. The wood is not real bad, no cracks or major dings. I will strip it but have not decided on finish yet.
If you are wondering why the cheap, single shot, bolt actions that will cost more to fix up than they will be worth. I don't really know. I'm just drawn to them. Maybe because I was brought up with them? They were really good accurate little guns that most anyone could afford and a lot of people started out with, and now becoming lost in history. Anyway.
