my SKS project, now with amateur camo finish

this was my first attempt at a camo finish, aiming for the general color scheme of the high desert. it turned out better than i expected, but i'm not completely satisfied and will probably do it over again. i overdid the greens and browns, not enough of the base color.

the gun is an unissued Yugo M59/66 sks, with a butler creek stock.
 
Not bad at all for your first try. Scuff it up and shoot it again if you don't like it. :D
 
I just tried to refinish an SKS stock; sanded, sanded, and sanded some more. Applied BLO, etc., et yada, and it still looks like crap. Lotsa dark spots from the cosmoline that WON'T come out. Mebbe I'll sand it all down again and try the camo route.
 
It looks pretty good to me-much better than what my first cammo job would look like.

i had that problem with a mauser. i couldn't get some of the spots out no matter what method i tried. what i ended up doing was getting a dark wood stain that matched the cosmoline spots, and stained the entire stock. kind of a hack job, but it turned out pretty nice after a few coats of BLO.

you'd be surprised how far these things can reach when the bore is shiny and new :D
 
A friend did a very similar pattern to his SKS which he uses for hunting. We did some comparisons and found it (yours) to be a pretty good and effective break-up pattern.

Boiled Linseed Oil, used on most military stocks at the time of original manufacture.

Have you tried using Easy-Off? It will remove everything with a couple coats. Spray it on, let it sit ( don't let it dry) for 15-20 min.. Rinse with vinegar to neutralize and second rinse with water. Let dry for about an hour and see if another coat is needed. You will have naked wood when done. A lot of people shun the method ( because of chemicals and using water), BUT IT IS BETTER THAN REMOVING MATERIAL. I know a lot of people that do it, along with myself (6 mil. surps. so far) with no ill effects.
