Nation Review has a darn good article on the importance of training. Inspired by Jason Falconer, the former police chief who stopped the knife wielder in Minn.

There are some good quotes in the article but for some reason I'm unable to copy them. Essentially, it takes more than owning a gun or normal range shooting to be the type of person who can stop an attack like that, but that training is available.

This is where I fail. I’ve shot a bit competitively, and it made a big difference in my abilities. I’ve no doubt training would do even more, but I never seem to find the time, money or the right place to train. All pathetic excuses as I could certainly find all three.

You have got priorities in life , as have we all. It's not a failing on your part.

You certainly are not pathetic, being aware of what you believe you have to accomplish. My best to you. :)

Don't look down on yourself. We all have reasons why we can't do more than we do. Work, family, finances, etc.

Personally I'd love to get some more advanced training but the $150+ a pop classes around here make that kind of hard.

My hope is that I'll run across someone at the range or a LGS that I can befriend and who is able and willing to give me some help in this aspect. I know, fat chance.

Anyhow, don't put yourself down. If you've shot competitively you've already done more than I and most have. I feel like putting 1-200 rounds a week downrange, even if just target shooting at the range, and actually carrying, puts me above par than most.

We all know we could do better but if you're making an effort don't look down on yourself.

This thread took a strange turn. I must be subconsciously projecting a bad day at work. Thanks for the kind words.

Really though, it’s a good article and worth reading… and who knew Keanu Reeves could shoot? (See the video embedded in the article)

Keanu is a talented man. And he knows that he is a very lucky guy.

During his film career, Reeves has engaged in several forms of artistic expression. Active as a musician for a decade, he played bass guitar for the bands Dogstar and Becky. Acting onstage, he performed as Prince Hamlet for the Manitoba Theatre Centre's production of Hamlet. He wrote the text for a picture book, Ode to Happiness, illustrated by Alexandra Grant. He has also produced a documentary, Side by Side, and directed the martial arts film Man of Tai Chi.

I hate how everyone fixates on the guy's LEO background as if it was the relevant factor in his performance. From what I gather, he is far more accurately described as a "pistol enthusiast" or even outright competition shooter, or concealed carry instructor at this point in his life. It'd be like describing Miculek as a midwife because he delivered a baby or a welder because of an earlier career in the aftermath of (what would obviously be) some epic John Woo gun fight involving hundreds of slain assassins.

Apparently anyone who pays close attention to his action movies. I don't have the eye or the inclination for such gun-nerdery when watching The Matrix/etc, but apparently he fully trains up for the gun sequences as much as anyone out there (Tom Cruise is also one of those guys who supposedly takes gun fighting portrayal fairly seriously in his roles). Reeves is supposedly an all around decent man, which probably explains why you don't hear about him in the news much.

I've seen a great deal of focus put on the training and occupation of the good guy in this story and as always, it's good to see our side win.
I am troubled with all the talk of how it was only his training as an LEO and the fact that he operates a training center allowed him to stop the attack.
