During an order to SOG recently, I had a bag (20 count) of .58 caliber Maxi ball toss in as I wanted something for my Springfield 1861, or a replica I'm considering on purchasing in the near future.
Can the 1861 Springfield use these or does it only use Minnie ball?
Also, would it be relatively safe to fire these (or Minnie ball) from my authentic 1861 Springfield if it's in good shape and the load is light.
I'm itching to fire these from the Springfield over perhaps 40gr of FFG, but not if it's inadvisable from those here. Is there anything in particular I should inspect to assist in determining whether or not my Springfield is up to such loads?
BTW, the only experience I've had with BP is a .50 caliber CVA Hawkins I used to have and a Pietta 1858 Remington I currently have, so I still consider myself as a "newbie" when it comes to such firearms.
