I just picked up 200 Sierra .4295 180gr. JHC bullets for just under 30 bucks

I usually reload 240gr rounds, but i couldnt resist at this price and figured the 180 gr rounds would be a little nicer out of my S&W.

Can anyone give some some load data for this weight with either H110 or HP-38 powder?

P.S. yes i know i need a reloading book. which ones are good?

Lyman #49 if you can't have but one.

Lyman shows 29.0 starting and 30.0 max with H110 & that bullet.
Using Magnum primers.

Hodgdon shows 29.0 & 31.5 with a Hornady 180 XTP.

HP-38?
Hodgdon shows with a 180 Hornady:
10.0 starting - 12.0 max.

But it's not a good .44 Mag powder at all. Too fast.
It gets 400 FPS less velocity at about 8,000 more pressure then H110.

Alliant 2400, Alliant Blue Dot, Accurate AA-9, HodgdonH110 & it's twin, Win. W296, are the major magnum powders. There are several more that will work fairly well too.
You do not always have to load the 44Mag to magnum levels. Lower intensity loads with lead bullets can be very satisfying for just punching paper for the fun of it. But that can come later as you develop your loading skills.
You need to get a couple of different manuals and learn to access the loading info that's available online.
www.Alliantpowder.com has just updated it's site.
www.Hodgdon.com
www.accuratearms.com
These are the powder manufacturer/distributor sites that you need to bookmark.

The first deer that I ever took with a handgun was with a 44Mag using 180gr Sierra JHP. I used 22gr of 2400. I believe the Max load is 24 or 25gr for the 180gr bullet. You'll need to check that.

Remember, the common sense approach to safe reloading is to minimize distractions and maximize your concentration on the job at hand. It will pay off in safe, accurate loads and the satisfaction that goes with it. I'm just assuming that you're fairly new at reloading.

Sierra 5th says:
180 JHC Ruger 7 1/2" barrel
CCI 350 primer
C.O.A.L. 1.600"
federal case
H110 powder 24.3-1300fps 25.9-1400 27.4-1500 Maximum 29-1600fps

With my 9.5 inch Super Redhawk 30.8 grains of Hodgdon H110 powder behind a 180 grain Sierra bullet gives me 1840 fps. This load is just below the max recommended load for H110 in .44 Rem Mag. (Speer) and above the max in others. For me it is deadly accurate though. Drop no more than 10% below this and work your way up based on accuracy.

one that`s not so popular because of metering is IMR 800x & Herco which does a fine job behind a 200gr, XTP .
i only loaded a few to test & hunt with.
mainly use a cast boolit now & IMR 4227.

be careful with the qwik powders they tend to spike pressure qwikly on the hi ends!!!

You sure this is listed by Speer?

As far as I know Speer doesn`t make a 180gr 44cal bullet and lists no data for one in their manuals that i know of. The 29gr listed in the Sierra book is quite hot in my 7.5" BlackHawk and I run a gr or so under with the Sierra HP and a mag primer.

I can tell you from experience that the 31.5 gr load of H-110 will get your attention and anyone around you as well. I shot that load for several years with a scoped Redhawk and got awesome groups at 100yds. It isn't however a plinking load. Stick with the lower loads or another powder for even less velocity. The 110 loads give a definative snap when touch off. I would not advise getting to the higher listed loads with your Smith. If you have access to some Unique it works well for target loads, or you might look at some Ramshot True Blue.

If just limited to the powders you listed I would use the starting data for the H-110 and only go up maybe a grain at the most.
