I've been looking at new pistols lately and I cant decide which one to get. I currently own a Kimber 1911 Gold Match 45 acp and a S&W 629 in 44 mag - (both in stainless) and I love them both. I recently picked up a Rock River AR-15 varmint to round out my rifle collection (and a new 32 gun safe!!) and I am finally pretty well set there. The gun bug has hit again and I find myself wanting a new pistol. I held a bunch of Brownings, H-K's and Berettas today. I am kind of leaning towards the Beretta 90-two. It comes in 9mm and 40SW. I've shot a few 9mm's (Taurus, Glocks, sigs...) but I have never shot a 40. And here is the dilemma. Why a 9 over a 40? Or why a 40 over a 9? Costs, both to purchase/own and shoot (read ammo) really dont concern me given the amount I shoot - and the disposable income I have, plus I have the resources to roll my own (As I do with shotgun and rifle stuff). I dont have the luxury of full time carry where I'm from and when I do, I carry the Kimber. Since this is an open post I'm open to all suggestions and comments.

Let me see if I can say this without coming across as offensive.

It doesn't matter what gun you get. In the ideal world, you would start with a problem, and work toward a solution. A gun is a solution. So you should choose the gun that best fits your problem. If your problem is self-defense, that tells you you should look at certain guns designed for that purpose. If your problem is target-shooting, you should look at target pistols. And so on.

But if you just want another gun (which, I hasten to say is as valid a reason as any) get what grabs you.

Seems like you're in a good place, and as you say, cost of gun and ammo is no problem, then I'd say go for either the Beretta 40cal, or a Sig P226 or 229 in 40cal.

Personally, I find the 40cal a potent, fun, caliber to master/learn, as it makes either the 9mm or 45cal, seem far less, in the recoil effects, for some reason, as it, the 40cal, also becomes basically mute, when it comes to recoil once learned.

Again, it's a challenging caliber, but very rewarding if ya get the right gun to shoot it with.. And if Beretta is the only one, ya can't go wrong IMO there, but either Sig mentioned are sweet, docile, 40cal shooters, as well.

I know with the Sigs mentioned, you can also get a 357sig barrel and use the same mags as for the 40cal for the 357sig caliber, and have 2 guns in one frame, see here:

Money no object, Ammo neither, Get what strike you and fits you hand. Since you are not going to carry it and can't hunt with it, get a 9mm, easier to shoot more, easy to purchase, easy to reload, more round in the gun, just simple.

I agree with Boarhunter and wish I had that problem. A smaller .45 1911 might fit the bill if concealed carry is a possibility. Although I realize you live in the woderful gun friendly state of NY.

I second the Glock. Preferably the 19/23.

I've owned a 92 for many years and though it's a great gun I feel it's simply just too darn big for the caliber it shoots. IMO of course.

Thanks for the input guys. And Vern no offense taken with the reply. Maybe it is just as easy as getting what grabs me. And as you so eloquently point out getting the gun is indeed the solution. Convincing my wife to allow me to drop another 800 or so on the gun and ammo to go with it are the problem.;). The 40's are sounding better to me all the time.

Personally, I like the 9m/m (over the .40 S&W) not because of the cost
of ammo; but because the 9m/m will shoot flatter over a longer distance
than the .40 S&W. Close in shooting, I guess it doesn't really make much
difference; but out past 70-80 yards, I can see where the 9m/m would
excel. As a matter of fact, I don't even own a .40 caliber weapon. I do
realize that this is a personal choice; and not everybody will be in agree
ment~! :uhoh: ;)

sounds like you want to broaden your collection. just my .02 - if you liked the 92 try a CZ, -have both in 9, dont have a 40 so can only advocate for the 9. whatevever your decision a new gun is always exciting
