Anybody out there had good luck with one of the lower priced Tasco, Bushnell, or BSA variable scopes that have an illuminated reticle?

It's for an air rifle that has minimal recoil. But this rifle does shoot inside an inch at 50 yards, so I want something that is capable of clear optics and maintains an accurate zero.

Any recommendations of what to buy, OR, to avoid?

Try Mueller. I have heard nothing but great things about them, and the price is right. So a search in google for "Mueller Optics" and their website will come up. I have searched all gun forums I know of, and from what little is posted, it is all VERY good. Infact I am considing getting their 8.5x25x50AO Eradicator.

Make sure it's rated for an air rifle, if not it will be toast in short order. The internal moving parts of an air rifle have killed many scopes.

+1 for 50 Shoter - air rifles are said to be far harder on scopes due to the nature of the recoil impulse....

I forgot to mention that my air rifle is a PCP that is pressurized to 3,000 psi. Unlike a spring air rifle that has spring-piston vibration and a wicked "one-two" recoil punch that rattles everything loose in time, the recoil of this pnuematic rifle is much the same as a firearm. I can virtually use any scope I desire. (You also can't fire the darn thing anywhere except where you'd normally fire a firearm. It sounds just like a 22!)
