Hello!

I would greatly appreciate advice from someone with experience buying, selling, shooting, and maintaining/repairing an SVT-40 rifle. I am looking to buy one in good...to...fair condition. What I don't know is:

- where to buy (dealers I talked to have nothing in stock or on the radar, and they can't order from anywhere)

- typical going price

- things to watch out for

Please share what you know - it would be very helpful. Also, I plan to check out the Crossroads Of The West gun show at Cow Palace in SF this coming Memorial Day weekend. I wonder if there might be an attending seller out there reading this - with an SVT-40 rifle on hand - perhaps we could talk?

Thanks

Nice ones seem to come up pretty rarely.

The decent shape, solid shooters seem to sell for around $1000-1100 or so.

No one is importing them anymore so there really isn't a place to just "order one" but they are out there. Check Gunbroker.

Be careful, there are a lot of pieced together guns and some just plain junk. I'm having a hard time figuring out the difference myself.....

I've been shopping for a good while now but the selection has just been thin for several months it seems.

Not much advice I know, hopefully some experts will be along. I'm interested in what they might have to say.

wow, for once something firearms related is cheaper in the EU, they're 250-350 here.

I'd have a hard time finding ammo that wasn't bergen primed like the mil surp stuff we get from the east though.

thought about one, but the tula 54 russian sks was too tempting, apparently unissued (didn't believe it) but it is in excellent condition

If at all possible, check out the gas system. They were shot with corrosive ammo when issued, and most all surplus ammo is corrosive. I wouldn't be worried about walking away from a SVT if the seller refused to let me check out the gas system. But then again I already have a very good example.

As far as dealers, keep an eye on Brock's surplus. They'll have one come through every so often. They're also very reputable, I've done a lot of business with them over the years. They only carry top of the line (collectible quality) guns.

THANK YOU, GUYS!

I very much appreciate the advice - and the links. Thanks again!

Wow I can't believe they are that high now:what:. I paid $300 for mine back in 01. Granted last time I tried to find a extra mag for it, it was nearly as much as the rifle.

Original magazines are outrageous at $130+.

Nonimport-marked and non-rearsenaled guns are nearly impossible to find.

BTW lykoris, nice SVT, but all your accessories are for a Mosin. Dealers/importers issue Mosin accessories because SVT cleaning kits and slings are rarer than hen's teeth.

wow and I thought Sig x-six mag prices were crazy :what:

the SVT isn't mine, the photo is taken from an armory up north here in Luxembourg, same for the sks photo.

these are from another armory up north, are these the original pieces

there was an estimate 50,000 of these made I think, the 'sniper' version, from what I read they were nowhere as good as the mosin in terms of accuracy.

I am filled with envy.
I plan to buy a Tokarev this year.
If only I had a time machine, so I could go back and smack myself upside the head when I decided to sell the one I had 10 years ago.

Nope. What you are showing is a common Mosin sling and Mosin cleaning kit pouch. I have an original SVT sling and cleaning kit and believe me they are different. Here is a close-up of the button which all SVT pouches have. It's black enameled metal with a sickle and hammer

Look for examples of original SVT accessories and slings here. http://www.mosinnagant.net/USSR/Svt-Photos85.asp

Kinda Funny...

Since I'm laid up, I've been seriously thinking about selling off a number of surplus rifles, and an SVT-40 (standard rearsenaled) in wonderful shape will be one of the first to go to the block for sale or trade. Not reloading 7.62 x 54 is a problem....every time I shoot it, I have to tear the whole thing down to clean it because of the corrosive ammo. It's a shame, because it's a pleasant shooter, too. You should be aware of this requirement.....and you should carefully check out the gas system of any SVT-40 you buy. JWF knows his stuff!
If you do run across one, the unrearsenaled ones have a darker more walnut stock color. The rearsenaled ones (not a bad thing) have plum -colored bolts, usually electropenciled. They have a blonder, shellaced stock.
Mine's quite accurate, and the folks I know who shoot them around here can usually coax 3 or 4 inch groups out of them, once you figure out which ammo they like.
Around here in PA, they ususally go for 900-1000 or so...you sure don't see them very often.
Nice kit, cannonball!

I stopped looking for magazines. Not only are they expensive, they also need to be rocked into place with a precise touch. Better off using stripper clips.

Here is mine with her Mosin cousins...

BTW: With some SVT-40 owners present... What gas settings are you using?
