What do you suggest? Something I can carry with a hunting/winter closes. I'm planning to carry my 686 with me on a hunt but if I use regular belt holster it won't be fast if I need it.. (closes)

Anything decent and not super-expensive?

Bianchi....

If you want a decent 4" barrel revolver holster for a 586 .357magnum, Id go with the Bianchi Intl, www.bianchi-intl.com UM84R. It's based on the US armed forces M12 sidearm holster and it can be worn different ways. The UM84R fits med/large 4" DA revolvers(GP100, 586/686, Python, S&W 19/66). The holster fits belts up to 2.25" wide. You can tote the 586 revolver with a flap or open style, strong side or cross-draw.
They aren't as common now but a few online vendors may still have the Bianchi models in OD or black.

I really like the idea of Guide's choice. I'm looking for open carry (over warm clothes) that's easy to draw.

Is there anything similar but cheaper than $165?

Simply Rugged pancake sourdough. Used it hunting & hiking in Colo. Carrying a Security Six, virtually same size/weight as 686. Hardly knew it was there. Crossdraw is an option, and you can wear it either on your pants belt or a separate belt. Very flexible. Perfect. Speedy turnaround.

I'm shocked that you value your ability to actually draw and fire the gun more than the tender sensitivities of other hikers and the general public. For shame! :D

Seriously though, if you can find a Bianchi holster that uses their quick-lock (sp?) system it should be able to attach to the pack's hip belt (unless your pack has a zipper pocket on the hip belt). I can't help much more than that as I don't carry a revolver any more.

I used to carry a Ruger Alaskan in .44 mag in a chest holster made by some company up in Alaska, but I think they've gone under since. Anyway, I didn't like the holster as it thumped my breastbone every time I took a step. Not painful, but more like the Chinese water torture. Others swear by chest holsters but I didn't like it, and eventually sold the gun (too heavy for long distance high elevation gain/loss dayhikes) and gave the holster to someone here on the forum.

I use a Simply Rugged Pancake Sourdough that is on the hip belt of my pack. It sits crossdraw on the left front/side, is out of my way, the weight of an N frame is unnoticeable and it's always easy to get to since the pack is always the top layer. No extra straps, belts, etc.

"...on a hunt..." No rifle? What do you think will attack you a handgun will stop but a rifle will not? Just curious.
If you annoy a bear and he(or worse, she with her kids) comes at you from less than 100 yards, you'll never be fast enough with anything. No .357 is enough to do anything anyway.

I was thinking about carrying it for hog hunt(in addition to my 7.62x39 carbine). I'm better with a handgun than rifle and pretty comfortable within 25 yards. So, if I saw piggy running my way I would do much better with it.

But now reading about how FAST they run - I might just not take any handgun with me.

Nonsense. We carry handguns because rifles get put down while doing other things, whereas the handgun is always on your hip. Not because it's a better tool for the job. However, a handgun can easily be more effective on bears than your average deer-appropriate rifle load. I've been deer hunting with a .250Savage this year and I guarantee the .44Mag on my hip would be better bear medicine than the rifle.

100yds, really??? Yes, bears are fast but they are no faster than lions, leopards, Cape buffalo, elephants and rhinos but folks have managed to stop them pretty successfully when they charge.
