I guess I'm weird or something , but the ar platform just never turned me on.

You're not weird at all. I've heard a lot of people say that. The Ruger American is available in both 5.56 and 300 BLK and the Mossberg MVP series comes in 5.56. I was considering both of them and talked to quite a few people who own them and really like them.

QUESTION: is there an apprecable amount of recoil reduction with a semi auto vs. a bolt action?

Don't know for sure, but I would think so since you have the spring, buffer, bolt and carrier all moving and absorbing the energy while there isn't much of anything to soak it up with a bolt gun.

I myself am an AR/Bolt gun fan. 223-556 in both rifles. Its hard to tell but sometimes i think my AR has more recoil than my bolt gun. Even with the same load. But maybe im just weird!........;)

Yawl really think I could download my super 30 to 223 recoil levels? Man that would be the cat's meow! Got any suggestions on bullet type, wt., powder selection for it.

The link I provided above will take you to Hodgdon's H4895 low recoil loads. They are tested for deer hunting @200 yards and they do work!

Sierra has a 125gr SPT Pro Hunter bullet (#2120) that's tough enough for deer even at the lighter weight.

Hornady has a 125gr SST bullet meant for deer hunting and a 130gr SP bullet too although I think the SST bullet is better.

If you're looking for a tougher bullet Nosler has a 125gr AccuBond bullet that should also work very well.

@~2600 fps those bullets from a 30-06 will be really easy on your shoulder and still take deer cleanly. The reduced load w/125gr bullet will produce 8.84 ft/lbs of energy while a 165gr bullet at 2900 fps will produce 19.30 ft/lbs of energy. A .223 firing a 60gr bullet @3150 fps will produce 5.75 ft/lbs of energy. You can make your 30-06 feel like a .223 and still enjoy your rifle.

Good luck and please keep us posted if you give those reduced loads a try.
