About a year ago, my father passed away. Among his firearm collection, was a rifle I had never seen despite I'm confident it has been in his possession for several decades. He had a recent inventory as of 2019, with notes next to several guns. Next to this rifle, was this note: "Custom Engraved Low Wall Single Shot, built by P.O. Ackley's engraver for himself, fully engraved action, Unertl scope". I cannot find ANY marking within the engraving, or under the forend. It's a beautiful rifle that has been stashed away for years. With that said, my father was a well known gunsmith in western Kansas from the late 50's through the early 70's. He and Ackley had at the least a working relationship, and in fact both, had there hands in his custom Winchester 70 that was chambered in 7mm Remington mag, which was his personal hunting rifle back in the day. So, maybe it's true, maybe it's "handshake story" from a gun show in Oklahoma in the 60's. Don't know. I would say he has had this rifle probably since that era, late 50's to late 60's, but he had no other explanation or proof of the one line story. I'm hoping to use a few forums to find any leads on the engraver, or the engraving style, etc. The gun will be passed on to my son at some point and remain in our family, and it would be nice to obtain some of it's history. However, I doubt this gun has seen daylight in 50 years, so I may be out of luck. 218 Bee heavy barrel for those curious.

To Rust Collector: I have seen the link to Cole before, and the stippling is very close. I couldn't find where he did much that wasn't the southwest style though. He was known for NOT signing his work though apparently. To Riomouse911...thx...it is a beautiful piece, and fortunately dad left behind some 218 Bee, and a sack of brass and dies. So it will probably get shot once or twice. To Gobsauce...I'd love to reach out to Ackley...but if he'd be 118 years old or so...just say'n :)

And though I'm not gun stupid, apparently I am forum stupid....I see the reply button for each post...now. Ha.

Welcome to the group! I hope someone can help you. Maybe Ackley's book from my first link would be a good investment to go with the rifle.

okay, I'll admit, this may sound like a longshot, but maybe someone on THR can do a seance?

Very, very cool rifle. My commiserations on your receiving it on your father’s death and my congratulations on having had a father with excellent taste.

It's almost Helfricht goes Tex-Mex. Similar to his style, with the acanthus leaves and stippling, but it definitely isn't Helfricht.

That's actually a good point, why not reach out to Ackley and see if they can identify the engraver?

Maybe the Long Island Medium can reach him, but for us who do not summon the dead, it might be a bit tough. Besides, if I was going to summon a famous gunsmith/barrelmaker from beyond, It'd be Harry Pope.

After reading the article about Cole Agee, it does look a lot like his work, but there is a short time frame that Agee and Ackley worked together. Agee could have put the gun together later, of course.

Brings back memories. Some kids had football stars as heroes, and I'll admit to some hockey stars (Gump Worsley, Gilles Meloche), but Harry Pope, JMB, Parker Ackley, John Garand, and Dean Grennell were some of my heroes as a kid.
