I need some help identifing a early percussion firearm I have. I will attach images for a better idea. It has a detachable stock and is very ornate tooling on the stock and appears to be some type of presentation piece, It appears to have silver inlay and has the words CHARTER OAK along the bottom plate of stock and a inlay of who appears to be Grover Cleveland on the stock with a bowie knife that inserts into end of stock marked E.C.C.Kellog. This piece was in a fire several years ago and some of the pieces have been lost, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure what you have, but it's quite interesting. Googled up the name and found these sites from the 1800's and patent information.

many thanks for the information. Do you think the stock might be made of wood from the Charter Oak, I understand Colt was able to get rights to the tree after if fell down but did other makers use the wood for gun stocks and pistol grips?

The Charter Oak is the patriotic symbol and official state tree of Connecticut. Legend states that in 1662, this majestic white oak tree served as a hiding place for the royal Charter when agents of England’s King James II came to seize it. When the historic tree was toppled by a storm in 1856, Colt acquired much of the wood, some of which he made into grips for special presentation pieces he called Charter Oak Models. His firstborn son also slept in a cradle made from pieces of the historic old oak. Today the Charter Oak is closely identified with Samuel Colt and Colt’s Manufacturing Company as a symbol of patriotism, defense of country, strength and virtue.

It's possible that this may one of the early Colt presentation pieces and the wood is from the tree.....several names seem to come up that are worthy of more research. SF Bennett, Colt, ECC Kellogg.

The fact that Grover Cleveland is on the gun somewhat fits with some other Charter Oak guns I remember hearing about....think there were some also made for Lincoln, Filmore?, and some other Presidents.
