Need Help, Which Rifle(s)

Ok, I find myself in quite a delema. I find myself fascinated my historical firearms as well as long range shooting. I look at all these beautiful milsurp rifles, like the K31, the M1 Garand, the, K 98, and the Moisin Nagant (ok, this one is not beautiful but I still like it). At the same time I love shooting at 400+ yards, but I lack the equipment to do with precision. I have come to the conclusion that I can't do both, and that I can either invest in a beautiful rifle collection, or in a serious long range rifle (or I could save my money, but seriously, that is not an option;)). I am torn completly in two on this one, so any suggestions or comments would be appreciated.
 
Rome wasn't built in a day and most peoples gun collection didn't happen in a year. When I was 18 I bought my fist shotgun. I say MY first as in it was the first that I bought with my own funds. My dad got me a shotgun at age 10 and it will get passed on to my son in a few years, had a .22 as a kid and dad still has it. Since I turned 18 12 years ago the collections has grown every year, a few years by 0, some years by 3 or 4, or 5..... depends on if the wife is asking.

Buy the one you want now, when the money's right on the next gun you want buy it. You think Microsoft was built overnight?
 
Two thoughts:

All of the rifles you've mentioned are quite capable of making solid hits at 400 yds -- if YOU are. Get out and practice with them. Learn to use the sights. Go to an Appleseed shoot. Learn what they are capable of -- and learn to get the most out of what you have. Hardware (the equipment) isn't as important as software (your skills), and what you learn from practicing 400 yd shots with the mil-surps will help you when you're shooting 600 or 800+ with a "precision" rifle.

Second, as Birdhunter said, most of us have been collecting firearms for decades. Financial situations improve. Long range precision rifles are unlikely to be anywhere close to the first on the chopping block if there is legislative trouble on the horizon: i.e.: there's always time. What's the rush and the worry?

You can easily have a rifle and scope that will meet 9 out of 10 shooters' definition of "long-range precision" for under $2,000. (Meaning a rifle that is capable of holding 1 M.O.A. past 400 yds.) Chances are, if you really want this, you can save that up within the year. (I'd start with Savage, myself. Surprising accuracy for not much cash.)

with a good K31 you could shoot up to 800yards (or more) with the tang sight.. Shouldnt be too expensive..

As for a collector gun, i'd go M1Garand
