I am confused by all the options that are available from S&W in the J-frame .357 mag revolvers. I am looking for a model that is stainless, 2-1/8" barrel, external hammer and has adjustable sights. The model 60 is close but I would like adjustable sights if possible.

Dave.

S&W does not currently make exactly what you want. But you can get very close in the current product line.

They make a M60 with adjustable sights and a three-inch barrel. It is SKU 162430. You could get this revolver and have S&W swap barrels if you really need the two-and-an-eighth inch barrel.

I'm not sure about their older models, but from my limited knowledge of the j-frames, you're SOL if you need adjustable sights :(

I have a 3" barrel Model 36 (blued Chiefs Special) and like that barrel length. It has a decent sight radius and also a long enough ejector rod to actually punch out the cases. I see no advantage to a shorter barrel for carry, since barrel length is rarely important to concealment. The barrel is almost always down and out of the way; of more import is the size and bulk of the butt and the gun in general.

If you can get what you want in a 3" barrel, I recommend going that way.

I'll second the 3" barrel as being far superior to a 2" . I have 2" j frames and the 3" are just as concealable(except in a pocket) and much better performers. This is especially true if you go .357 mag. 2" barrels on those babies are called "ear wax " guns !;)

Depending upon for what purpose you want adjustable sights - an alternative might be to get Crimson Trace laser grips for your J-frame. I have them on my 442, and others have reported great results on other J-frames. They are adjustable to make the POA (the laser spot) fall exactly on the POI for each individual gun at your chosen range.

I agree with the others (and apparently with S&W) that if you want adjustable iron sights, you should go to a 3" barrel. The snub-nose revolver simply does not give sufficient sight radius for adjustable iron sights to be any more accurate than non-adjustable. I personally think the 3" is only marginal for accurate aiming potential, but your mileage may vary.

thanks for the help

Once again you folks are a wealth of information. I think the 3" will work just fine. I was thinking carryable farm/urban revolver for defense against various vermin.
