as a few of you know i am currently in the planning stages for building a target rifle to be used between 100 and 600 yards.

while browsing around on various sites i have come upon some scopes that have gotten my attention because, their general specs (power range, target knobs, seemingly decent reticle design, adjustable obj, etc) fit the bill for the type of glass i want to mount to my gun AND they fall into the "affordable enough that i can start shooting almost as soon as i get the gun" price range.

all examples have a power range that runs to at least 12x or higher (at least one goes as far as 32x but that's a bit much)
all have some form of Target turret knobs,
and all models i'm interested in have an Adjustable objective.

the ones i have questions about and therefore would like to know of anyone's experience with are...

the BSA Platinum 8-32x44 with AO and Target knobs
and the BSA Contender 8-32X50 AO, target turrets

the Leatherwood Optics, Distinguished, Expert and Uni-dial lines (all three of these lines seem to have Target turrets, and are available with AO etc) i am especially interested in these, b/c if the history of these given on the website is true, then even if they are made overseas, the prices are rather low, are these decent scopes or are they fancied up pieces of junk??

and what of the Semi- or Mini- target turrets found on some of the Bushnell Elite 4200 line?? no mention of full sized regular target knobs anywhere on the site.... are these just as adjustable but simply lower profile, or do they have a handicap compared to full-sized target turrets??

well anyway thank you for putting up with my not-so little, Information overlaoded, out of the loop, and let's face it LOST, self and all my questions.
I am appreciative of any information you can give me so as to enlighten me in my quest to "get what i need without having to hock my soul"

thank you once again

I would stay FAR FAR FAR away from BSA. Leatherwood is ok. I would stick with either Bushnell Elite, Burris Black Diamond or Leupold. There are better optics out there, but I believe these three are the best bang for the buck..

I have in the past couple of years tried out some scope products produced in China including BEC and BSA just to at least give them a chance. My conclusion from the results I've seen are that I will never purchase any telescopic products produce in China. Numerous reasons but the primary one was optical quality. That is sometimes hard to determine if all you are looking through is a BSA but if you had a Leupold next to it to look through and compare, you'll be amazed at poor the BSA is. (Note - the BSA I had was a non-Cats Eye or any of their 'higher' end lines. THe Leupold use for comparisons was a Vari-X II.)

Suggest savin up the bucks for a decent scope.
Bout any scope will be sorta adequate at 100 yds...untill you get good.
Out at 600 yds...better off with good iron sights than cheap optics.

Um considering that i NEED to go as inexpensively as possible, and still wind up with a scope that is "decent enough" to use at 600. and only till i can save up for better optics. what would you all suggest as a good starting point 9with teh features mentioned above) at $300 or (preferably) less??

as i've said my current goal for this project is to be shooting as close to Febuary (if other things in life go as needed) as possible. AFTER the inital build up in which the rifle itself (the more inportant part in my veiw) will be focused on, i can save up for a "proper" scope. but for right now i am quite frankly looking for a "simply adequate or better" scope that cost no more than $300.

If I had the resources to get whatever i wanted optice wise for this project i'd be buying a Leupold or Springfield scope right out of the gate. but alas this is not currently possible.:( :(

Well since you need to stay around $300.00 then I suggest that you watch EBAY and EE boards on AR15.com and other places for good deals on used optics.

thanks i'll definately keep that in mind when the time comes (or approaches) to buy the optics.

can't move on anything right now due to other considerations (life is NOT being kind right now, but looks like it will change soon)
