I have a Mossberg 810 that's in need of a rear aperture sight. The barrel actually identifies it as an 810A, but searches for that model come up with very little.

Williams makes just what I'm looking for, though I don't know whether it'll fit my rifle. It's the model FP-70AP-TK. According to their website, it'll fit the Mossberg 800. I've read that the 800 and 810 were short and long actions, respectively, of the same rifle.

1. Are the 810 and 810A the same thing?
2. If the Williams sight will fit an 800, will it fit an 810?
3. I've read conflicting info as to whether the sight will mount on the side or on the top of the receiver. My receiver is drilled and tapped on the left side as well as on the top for Weaver bases. What's the deal on this?
4. Will this new rear sight allow me to continue to use the original front sight?

The person to ask is Vic Havlin @ www.havlinsales.com , he has an extensive parts bin of old Mossberg stuff.

My guess is that the 800 / 810 are the same gun except for the receiver (short vs. long-action). My second guess is that the letter indicates the caliber, like their shotguns (A=12GA, C=20GA, E=.410, etc.)

Oh, and the 810 and 800 are completely different actions, though one is long and the other short. THe 810 has four locking lugs, opposed, whereas the 800 as 6 locking lugs in a triangular pattern similar to the Browning A bolt. The 810 has an adjustable trigger while the 800 is factory-set. They do share sights, though, as well as other minor things like sling swivels (but not butt plates).

1. The letter designation merely refers to the caliber. The 810A is 30-06, the B is 270, the C is 7mm Mag. 810AH is a hinged floorplate, etc. The receivers are all the same.

2. It should (and one is on Ebay at the moment)

3. Side

4. Yes.
