Need Scope and Buttstock Recommendation

Yes, I'm new to AR's, so be gentle with me.

Purpose: general plinking out to maybe 300 yards, maybe 3 gun, home defense.

I imagine that I need some type of magnification, but don't want to go overboard. Looking to spend in the $250 range.

Buttstock question: fixed or retractable for this setup?

Out to 300 yards, you need a fixed stock with LR ammo, although 223 is not as stable as 308 out to 300 yards. Try a Nikon 3-9 x 42 prostaff. Fits your budget, and good enough for your application.

i disagree with all of this. i shoot collapsible stocks past 300 yrds all the time, including in 3gun. 223 is perfectly adequate for that range. i shoot service rifle at 600 yrds with it all the time and wish rules would allow a collapsible stock.

my advice if you plan to do 3gun is to NOT get a bull barrel. in fact, i wouldn't get a bull barrel for a plinker either. if you do though, i'd get a heavier stock to balance it. maybe an ace socom, or magpul prs. for optics, i'd look at a 1-4x20. not sure what's available in that price range though
 
To the OP, please compare the ballistics (velocity and energy) of 223 vs 308 at 300 yards:

For 223:

The difference is quite self-evident. There is a reason why most Military LR application out to 300 yards are 308-based, namely M14 DMR, XM110, or Rem700-based bolt guns. My friend's platoon in Iraq recently received ONE new M14 in SAGE EBR stock in late April for DMR purpose after many months of waiting.

Forgot to mention: if you are just interested in plinking, then 223 may suffice, anything more serious out to 300 yard, you need 308.

For $250 you can get a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5 x 14. Mounting the scope is going to cost $900 -$150 if. You are not going to just get a pair of High rings and be done. Do not over look the problem of eye relif with the AR and good scopes. Make sure your mount has some forward offset. I think the Armalite 1 peice mount is a reasonably priced/quality product. There are cheaper units but be careful. I love mounting optics on ARs becuase there are so many options.
 
I'd suggest a retractable stock. Being able to play with your length of pull and find the sweet spot that works for you and your stance is awfully nice. A lot of people really like the Magpul CTR stock, but having handled and shot it I didn't think it did anything that the plain jane M4 or CAR style doesn't do. I'd probably stick with one of those.

As for optics, I don't know that you are going to find much that fits the "home defense" part of your equation with magnification in your price range.
