I recently purchased a Hornady LNL kit and am having some problems with the powder dispenser. I'm trying to reload for the 45 auto. Im trying to get 5 grains of powder. I can't get the depenser to consistantly drop a charge. It varies up to .4 grain. I even tried to measure heavy loads to see if I could get any consistancy. It still varied up to .4 grain. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions. I have read about the pistol insert but am a little concerned that it would not fix the problem. So if anyone has experiance with this insert or any suggestions it would be much appreciated. I would like to get the variation down to + or - .1 grain.

What powder?

It would help to know what type of powder you are trying to throw.

Other than that, you DID de-grease it first, right? Did you also run a full pound of powder through it before you tried to measure some? Powder has graphite on it, a coating of graphite helps make the powder flow through better. It also discharges static in the measure, which plays hell with powder clinging to the measure parts. Wiping with a dryer sheet will also help with static.

Im using Titegroup. It was degreased, but I have not ran a pound of powder through it. I will try that in just a few minutes. Thanks for the ideas.

I'll add in addition to the other comments is install the RCBS powder baffle:

You have to flatten it out slightly to fit snuggly in the Hornady, I have one in both of my RCBS Uniflows and my Hornady powder measure. I normally see 0.0-0.05 deviation on 2200 (ball) and 0.0-0.1 max on Unique (flake)

If you need to throw charges 10 grs or less use the pistol meter insert. For over 10 grs the standard meter works fine. The only exception is Trail Boss which is so bulky you can use the standard meter with charges as little as 3 grs.
