What's up folks. Just got a NEF SB1 in trade for a part, it's a beaten little bugger but I see potential in lil' pup. It's a 12 gauge with a 3.5" chamber, and has the 'Winchoke' screw-in choke tube setup, meaning my X-Full Mossberg tube fits in there nice and fine. There's a bit of rust on this one, already stripped it apart and plan to bead blast it and reblue, thinking about making this a Turkey gun.

Questions being, have you ever run into issues with one of these lil' break opens? Ever put a scope on it? I'm looking at an Aimtech scope mount they have specifically for the NEF shotguns. Then I need to decide on a turkey scope or a red dot... my main concern is cheek height with the factory stock vs. needing a replacement stock.

So, how is your NEF setup? Do you like it? Taken any game with it?

It's a 32" barreled single shot 12ga, with recoil pad and simple leather sling. That, along with the bandoleer loaded as pictured (all 2 3/4", mostly 4, 6, and 8 shot, some 00 buck and two slugs), allows me to wander into the woods happily knowing I can take anything that walks, flies, or crawls.

No issues in over 1,500 rounds now. I say leave it mostly stock - the recoil pad and sling are practical, not "tactical", and that's the way it'll stay.

I've taken mine out for a few days out in the woods for a little fun time with a few friends.
The nice thing I learned about it is that it works in pretty much in any condition (we were in 3ft of snow and at about 10 degrees) but it eats anything you feed it pretty well.

PTK, I wasn't aware that slugs would work with these. How are they?

Not messed with that set up, too hi-tech for me.

We always run bone stock, with fixed choked on single shots, these seem to have a long proven history of working.

WE prefer 20 bore, due to Rule of 96, and other reasons.
Oh we like the youth models too.

Mine is a Youth H&R Topper in 20 bore fixed modified choke and factory recoil pad.
It tosses some of the best pellet patterns, and slug groups.

I have run 100/100 shooting regular skeet, felled 15 doves only using 12 shells, felled ducks, geese , small game and mine was used to fell a Buck and Doe, about 10 min apart.

Mine has felled rabid critters, on the run or charge...

Quite a few folks have one like mine, are the one just like it in adult or other finish.

I have not shot mine in sometime - someone cleaned it and not sure it will work *wink*

I show up and often use one like mine, or I beg, whine, plead and grovel to use the 28 gauge one, which most times means I get a .410.

I want choke in a serious shotgun and I prefer fixed chokes.

Mine the Archives, there's some input on the NEF/H&R single shots.

Briefly, lots of us have used lots of these for lots of things. We're happy with them for the most part.

Recoil varies from stout to hellish. Slugs and 3.5" loads fall on the hellish end.

I love my H&R Topper M48 12ga. Fantastic gun. It was all beat to hell when I bought it but the wood stock and forend was my first attempt at refinishing wood. It's a great gun.

Lots of fun, and cheap to boot. Kick is stout, but there is something to be said for the simplicity of the thing. Call H&R or check out www.hr1871.com under "customer support" and then "barrel accessory program" to see if it is new enough to be sent in for other barrels. If so you can ship the frame off to get barrels in other sizes fitted, as in .410, 28ga., 20ga., 16ga., and other models of 12ga. not to mention a .50 cal blackpowder setup.

For those who recall I did this and promised to offer a range report after the barrels came in, well, the new baby takes all my spare time right now (it's a boy!) so it'll be a little while yet.

I'm tired, but happy about it. :)

Itchin' to shoot though...

It is a great little shotgun. I have the standard 28" barrel that came with the gun and I bought a 20" barrel with rifle sights for slugs and a .410 barrel for it as well.

I have taken a few pheasants with the 28" barrel and a couple of jack rabbits with the .410 barrel...... It is the shotgun I usually carry when I am out on my ATV at the ranch "Checking fences":

I love my h&r single shots I have em from 410 to 10 ga. plus a couple in rifles
I am a big old hillbilly I can shoot a 338 win mag or a 10 ga all day long
A 3.5 inch shell in that gun :what:f@#$^%g hurts :what:it will do anything needed with regular shells any way I have a camo h&r turkey gun made before h&r started the screw in chokes that patterns well with any shotshell I have tried
#00 buck #4 buck and will put cheap winchester slug in a 6" circle @ 50 yards all day long

:D thanks for the laugh plumberroy I'll have to try a 3.5" shell in this one and let ya know how bad it hurts!!

Funny thing is, as soon as I took it apart I found out the previous owner stuck a lead rod into the stock to help with the recoil! I'm going to give this a shot with and without the lead rod, see how bad it is. Since this stock came with the ventilated recoil pad from NEF I at least have the option to fit something like an R3 pad on there or something, then blast the stock and give it a matte black krylon finish or maybe do a home-brew camo.
