New silencer on the way for .22
Just arrived at dealer last week and I went down and picked up the paper work (they do all the paperwork shuffling for you).
So… I take the form 4 and FP cards to County S/O for background check. Go to the “clerk” window and said I’m here for a background check. Clerk asks “what’s it for”. I reply a “NFA item”, (trying to be a little descrete) clerk has puzzled look and asks "what", I said “SILENCER”, Clerk #1 says to clerk #2 “oh look its for a silencer”. I’m already getting these anti vibes and haven’t even started the process. Dajavu from previous CCW experience. Clerks look over the form 4 and are kind of perplexed. I said “I need to sign them in your presence”. Clerk #1 says “uh.. uh… I don’t know where you are suppose to sign, these aren’t our forms” I’m thinking no duh, they are federal forms. I said “I also said I need to staple the photos to each of the forms”. Clerk looks at the forms, doesn’t see where to attach, I said “just send the forms back under the bullet proof glass with a stapler and I’ll fix it”. Clerk #2 snickers, Clerk #1… “stapler won’t fit through the slot”. As clerk #1 is holding up the forms I point to the box marked “PHOTO” and said it goes there.
Next on to finger print. While doing finger prints clerk states “what’s with the silencer… I think of the mob and gangsters when I see them” I reply “that’s because that’s what the media has lead you to believe”. So she persists, “why do you need one” I reply “it’s not about need, it’s about want”. They are legal to own, at least in NV, and I want one”. Clerk asks “why do I want it”. I reply because they are legal to own and I want one”. Well clerk couldn’t get a rise out of me and finger prints were done. After finger prints are done I say “I can’t be the first person to get a background check for a silencer.” Clerk says “no there was one other guy a while back that was dressed really grungy and looked pretty rough”. I said “well that doesn’t really matter much, long as he was legal”. I said “besides I already have a CCW from this office and work for a state agency that requires a background check” and I was dressed business casual. I said to clerk “I guess you can’t lump me in with the other guy then can you” No reply from clerk. Clerk said I’d probably hear from them in a week or so, sheriff’s secretary is out this week so there will most likely be a little longer than normal delay for background check.
You’d think that living in NV you’d be immune to that kind of mentality, but I guess ignorance abounds everywhere. I’ll have to put on a eating grin when I go pickup up the completed form 4.
I’m about 6 weeks away for having it home in the safe. Feds take 3-4 weeks and I expect 2 weeks for the local S/O background check.
